    hi,
im joshua. i was talking to my uncle the other day who is stationed in afghanistan flying blackhawks and i was telling him how i wanted to join the Coast Guard. After i told him this he asked how tall i was, and i told him 5'8". He then proceded to tell me you must be 6 foot in order to join the Coast Guard. (He used a very serious tone) After hearing this my heart sunk a little bit. He said you have to be 6 foot so you would be able to walk back to the shore in the event the you capsized. I didn't quite catch it at first, but then he started laughing and revealed that it was a little joke that fellow military men play with the Coast Guard. I dont know if the Coast Guard finds that very funny, but i guess the funny part is that i believed it.

That joke builds on the old remark that states "Coasties are shallow-water sailors". I guess it was supposed to be a derogatory remark when first coined but actually, if you think about it, some of the roughest water you'll encounter is shallow water. Especially in a storm.

I don't know how old you are, but if you're still in high school, you might want to talk to an Auxiliarist or Coastie about the AIM program. This program offers candidates a chance to qualify for a week's free summer training at the USCG station in New London to see if they'd like being a Coastie and then to apply to the USCG Academy for a tuition-free college education.

HeatwaveDave, the Academy is about the farthest thing from "free". shocked yeah

george, yes, if you are already in, tell your superiors that you want to apply. I'm sure they'll give you a hand. Several of my best friends (class of '04) were priors. They're all LTjg's now.  However, I think the max age is 23... so get to hoppin if you really want to do it. I think they allot so many spots for prior enlisted to become cadets.

As for "shallow-water sailors", the first time I heard that we were at a football game against the Merchant Marine Academy. rolleyes

The Merchant Marines have an Academy? Wow, I thought they were just a bunch of old WWII vets or something.

    Hi, Joshua,

I could see where your uncle was going...I am a Coastie and found it funny.  However, I did not learn if you actually pursued your dream of joining the Coast Guard.  Hope you did! It worths it!

Funny that we're shallow water sailors, when we sail the same waters the Navy does. Africa, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Atlantic.

Oh well, you know what they say...

    Never
    Again
    Volunteer
    Yourself

Ok so the day of my DH's graduation our good friend came and he's in the Navy. He was making some sassy remark about the CG so of course I tagged along (cause I'm sassy too and hey I can't pass up an easy joke) and said "...Yea Marsh and if we see someone drowning in a 2 inch puddle you'll know how to save them because your now an official puddle pirate!" Of course our friend was laughing really hard but DH looked at me and was like "Hey! Who's side are you on??" hehe I just thought I'd share.
