Last I heard you request assignment to the Dive Program in boot camp. You make the request, jump through some flaming hoops of fire, if they like you, you start training after boot camp. If they don't you're fed to hungry wolves.

Actually, E, if you check out the Special Assignments website prior dive experience is not required. You apply, if you get selected you go. How's that for gov't efficiency?

The answer the real question here is that they picked around 12 people to try out for the dive program straight from boot camp. they were only planning on keeping 6 total out of them. i know for a fact 4 or 5 of them dropped before they ever left for training in florida. It isnt going to be something you get to request for a while in boot camp

Jimmy used to dive, recreational never for the CG, and one time I thought about trying it. I love, LOVE to swim, I am a strong swimmer and have taught swimming lessons for the American Red Cross. I can dive to the bottom of a 15' pool and never bat an eyelash. I'm not claustrophobic... but I put on that scuba gear and attempted to go down... oh hell no! I felt that water close in around me & breathing through some funky apparatus, not on my own with the air surrounding me... oh hell no! I give divers a lot of credit, professional or recreational. That scares the bejeebers out of this kid!

Not for this kid either...the pressure on the ears is unbearable at only 5 feet...my feet are even under the water yet...

It looks really peacful and cool.

I love to dive, just wish I had more time to do it. I do mostly shore dives and don't go really deep but there is just nothing like it. I have done a couple of dives with the Auxiliary to do inspections of buoy chains, and piers etc for the Coast Guard as they don't have enough active duty divers. This last winter, while diving, I could hear the humpback whale songs!! Thank goodness I couldn't see the whales - I think THAT would scare the beejeezus out of me!

I think GEARS should apply for the position of the "Commandant's Driver".

We were out fishing in the MWR boats one afternoon. They were only 16 & 17' Boston whalers... great for fishing, couldn't go too far but you didn't have to in Kodiak to be over a great halibut spot. But we were returning to base and we had heard whales near us for the better part of the afternoon... we were steaming right along when all of a sudden one spouted and another slightly breached not all that far from the boat. These were orca's not humpbacks but OMG they were so close and we just had a tiny boat!!!!

Jaws is my favorite movie ever... I couldn't help myself... "We need a bigger boat!" LOL Absolutely gorgeous creatures, so amazing and graceful and silent in the water for such a big fish! (Please don't correct my terminology of "fish" I know they are mammals...)

    Southern,

There are people on this forum that get offended with my posts. Can you imagine me behind the wheel of the Comdt's Car?

I would give myself a week before I became a FN again. But, then again... the Comdt might appreciate my cantankerous attitude and big mouth. In which case, I could be promoted to LT in the same week... hmmm...

I would rather drive a truck full of drunken sailors and nitroglycerin than drive the Comdt. But, that's just me.

i will tell you teh few times i drove teh Vice Commandant around it wasnt bad but i wouldnt want to do it for a full tour. Yes you get some great schools out of it and learn to drive better but just think about the time away from home along with the chance of messing up so easily

As for the dive program again, I was talking to the kid who got the last slot for it straight from bootcamp, the first day was an 8 mile run on the beach! He had said that they wanted to see how people straight out of boot camp compare with petty officers. They are pretty crazy, runnin around in their short shorts singin about hammerheads! There were only 8 people left at Cape May by the time I left... Oh and for all you future recruits, don't get caught talking to recruits in other weeks, no bueno! Southern118, where are you stationed within Cape May? I've been trying to pick out who you are while I was there but never could nail it.
