DC's are everywhere, as I DC I was stationed on a 205 foot cutter, Maintenance and Repair for a whole district or the plumber at a light house. A DC learns welding, firefighting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing. You are a jack of all trades and will find yourself doing some ungodly nasty duty. I decommissioned a light house and installed a 40 foot pipe tower when it was 4 degrees below zero. On one job, I mixed 700 bags of cement in one day for a concrete base upon which to bolt a pipe tower and light. It is not a job for the faint hearted.
However, everything, I learned prepared me later on in life to become a Chief Engineer of a midtown office tower so in the end it was worth it. Also like the lighthouse, once in a while you get easy jobs.
