    Hey everyone,
I've been patrolling the forums for a while now, finally decided to actually register so I can chime in on some of the talk.

    My names Scott.
I'm 19, living in Florida (about 30 minutes from the Clearwater aviation base.

Anyways, I thought about joining the Coast Guard back when I was about 17 years old and then somehow the whole idea kind of just left me. But now it's back and I'm ready to go. My girlfriends father is in the Coast Guard, hes at the Clearwater location and he actually gave me a tour of the base yesterday! Which was awesome because not too many people get to actually tour the actual base, before even ever speaking with a recruiter! He's an AET, which I plan on either going as AMT or AET. I'm open for both. Anyways, my girlfriends father called one of his buddies that is a recruiter and he is going to go with me sometime this week to go talk to him and see some details of it all.

At this point, I am 99.9% ready to go. My mother is against it, it gets her upset, and when I try to TALK about it, she just blurts out "do what ya want" and walks away. But thats not what I want, i want to actually talk with her about it and tell her all the benefits but idk how im going to work that one out. I dont like making her upset, but at the same time i have to do what is going to be best for me.

Anyways, glad to finally be aboard the forums and ready to learn more and more.

Also... im sorry I kept referring to my girlfriends dad as "girlfriends dad" I don't know his rank otherwise I would have properly said it, I did not want to guess and offend him, even though he will not see this, but its still the point that matters.

    hop

The recruiter might have some stuff you can bring home for your mom to look over. Maybe that will help to sway her a bit in your favor. Whatever you do don't expect her to embrace the idea anytime soon if she is really dead set against it. You can also have your girl's dad speak to her. I am sure her biggest fear is it is the military and her baby can get hurt or worse... That is an acceptable fear for a mom. Don't push her, just continue to mention it or see if you can find a show on tv (Discovery, History something like that) that will highlight the CG and the missions and have her watch it with you. Anything that will put her mind at ease that while we are a military branch and we do go in harm's way where others fear to tread it's a lot different then the Army or the Marines... Best of luck on that front!

As for everything else it sounds like you have a lot of good knowledge around you and you are off to a fine start. If you have any questions and "dad" isn't around, feel free to bounce some stuff off of us. We'll be happy to help how we can.

I also think you show a lot of respect in not referring to your girlfriends dad by an incorrect rank. Trust me, if you decide to sign the papers, you'll figure it out real quick. :-)

Best of luck and welcome aboard!

    Welcome Scott!

Invite your mom here to the forum and also to take a tour of Clearwater Station with you again. Those would be huge in helping her understand what a great thing you are trying to do, what a great career choice you have made and what a great second family you will gain by joining the Coast Guard.

When I told my mom I was moving to Texas at 18 years old she freaked like you could not believe and really tried anything and everything to stop me. I kindly said I was going and would like it if she came along on the move to see what Dallas was like. That was the longest 5 days with mom and new wife in very close proximity of a small car and hotel rooms sad  but afterwards she new we did the right thing and all as been good since.

Your mom just has fears and anxieties about you joining a military service but I truly believe that if she learns what I have learned over the last few months she will be more then supportive.

I wish you the very best and if I can help please do not hesitate to ask.

In His life changing name, God Bless!

    Scott,
My mother was against me joining the Coast Guard many years ago. I was determined to do some growing up and joined when I was 20 years old. She now doesn't regret me joining. She was able to drive cross country with me when I graduated "A" school in Yorktown to home in utah for a visit. Than she visited Alaska which she never would have ever gone to in her life, if wasn't for me stationed there. Deep down inside she will not forgive herself if she stops. I talk with my mom about it almost 20 years later about the day I signed up and the pride she had when I took my oath. Have her join these forums and talk with other moms about how they felt.

    Good for you, Scott!

Sounds like you already have a foot in the door so to speak. Knowing someone in the Coast Guard who's willing to assist you through the process will surely help.

I myself just finished taking my ASVAB and getting my physical at MEPS. If you would like some insight about what to expect when it's time for you to go or if you have any other questions, shoot me a message. I'd be glad to help!
