MIAMI - It was the first drug bust for the Miami-based crew of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Dolphin.
The crew seized 1,250 pounds of marijuana -- worth about $2.5 million -- headed west from the Bahamas, officials announced today.
During a routine patrol earlier this month, the Dolphin spotted a 29-foot boat with a U.S. flag moving west from Bimini, Bahamas, Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Barry Bena.
Crew members boarded the vessel for a safety inspection and found 115 bricks of marijuana in plain view, Bena said.

The contraband was unloaded June 13 at the Coast Guard Sector Miami.
Two suspected smugglers were arrested and handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, Bena said. Their names were not released.
The Dolphin is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Miami.
