We were stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska and I have lived in Kodiak, Alaska too.
Ketchikan is in southeast Alaska, very beautiful...very rainy! Oh my goodness do they get the rain! Approximately 16 miles of road to drive on...I used to work for Alaska Airlines and I had to take a ferry to work because the airport is on Gravina Island..its about a 5 to 10 min ride across. (Remember the political hot issue a few years ago regarding the Bridge to Nowhwere??) Thats exactly where its at. Ketchikan is relatively quiet in the winter but when spring time hits....cruise ships galore are in town so downtown gets quite crowded. The base is small as most of them are. There is a small exchange, small gym, a very nice club called The Crow's Nest... a nice galley and barracks for the single guys and gals. Married CG families live on the economy. When we were there it was hard to find a house to live in.
Theres great fishing...beautiful scenery. The Tongass National Forest is there...beautiful.
Ketchikan is approximately 650 air miles from Seattle, WA....about a 90 min plane ride...
ask away if you have any questions.
