    Hi all-
I am prior service (E-5 in the Army Reserves, got out 3 yrs ago) considering the CG Reserves.  From other posts it sounds like your rate is determined by what is open in nearby units, is that right?  From what I can tell I would keep my rank since it is less than 4 yrs since I got out.  My ASVAB scores were in the 99th percentile and I have a Bachelors degree and California Teaching Credential.  I am 39 so the clock is ticking but I think I'm OK.  Can anyone tell me anything about the units (and the rates available there) in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Monterey.  I live 1 1/2 hrs from SF and 45 min from Monterey.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Port Security looks fun to me unless it is just guard duty.  Is Port Security code for Kuwait port security.  Are there active duty assignments available within the reserves?  What I'm getting at is I could work in an active capacity but would have to remain in my area (unless deployed of course, I just couldn't relocate, wife just makes too much money and doesn't want to move away from family).  Of course I know to contact a recruiter just looking for experienced advice.  Please forgive any noob mistakes in wording and customs/courtesy.

All of these questions are best answered by your local recruiter. There are variables that need to be discussed to give you a realistic answer. The only jobs you can apply for are current open positions. Your local recruiter will be able to help with that.

You would have to have a transferable skill to keep pay grade and realistically, you will not keep E5. If you have a transferable skill you may keep E4, but probably come in as an E3. I went from E6 to E3 when I joined)

Best bet is to call your recruiter.

    Hope this helps,

    Vr,
    Chuck

Oops, that was the Navy Reserves prior service entry standards.  Ugh, that would definitely be a deal breaker...

Thanks-- does the USCG Reserve have their own version of the Navy Reserve's Full Time Support (FST) program?

What a terrible post I put up I thought I canceled it since I could not get it to look right but must have hit submit. Not sure if it helped you much especially since it looks like going back to an E3 was a deal breaker.

I do not know anything about you last FST program question.

It looks like I would only keep my rank if my Army or civilian skill/duties ported over well to a USCG rating on the open rating list. I can't find a 2009 ORL but the 2008 didn't look too promising. I was a combat engineer in the active Army and spent four years in the reserves as a battle command staff trainer and observer/controller so maybe Operations Specialist, but I don't have the technical training even if I am familiar with an operations center. Civilian side my degree is in Social Science and I am an elementary school teacher. I graduated from a police academy years ago, maybe Port Security (but not on ORL)? If I don't qualify for an ORL rating then the USCG website says I would join as an E-1!! I was really hoping to serve in a role that had a more direct impact on homeland security so I was looking at the USCG. I will still talk to a recruiter but I would still appreciate your collective experience/advice.
