My son is at Cape May and will graduate on July 9th. He joined as a reservist. Do the reservists have to go to a training school when they finish boot camp?

No I don't believe they do.. They just do one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year.. That is all they are required to do if I'm not mistaken.

I would imagine so, since reservists have guaranteed ratings.
Hopefully someone will be by soon to give you a more definitive answer.

Yes they go to an A-School after boot camp. The wait for A-School depends on what your son chose as a rate(job) when he signed up. Your question if they HAVE to go to a training school; I am not unsure if it is required or not.

I myself for example, joined as a MK reservist and my A-School is about 1 years wait after I finish boot camp.

They have to learn the rate they have been hired/recruited to do... so yes, they do go to a training school. How soon they go, I think depends upon the starting date of the A school. But I believe it is a pretty fast turn around. No sense getting a reservist that is going to be an MST and not send him to school for a year or two. So yep... Do you know what rate your son is going for?

I'm sorry, I'm still green at all of this. It's either maritime safety or maritime security, I'm not sure which because I get them confused. (does MST stand for one of them, or are they one in the same?) The reason I ask is because my son never mentioned going to school after boot camp, so I was wondering if he was told by his recruiter? Also, if he knows he's going to do his one weekend a month and 2 wks. in the summer at Cape Cod, does he still fill out a dream sheet? Thanks you your help!

MST is Marine Science Technician... if he is going into Maritime Security he might be going to Maritime Enforcement Specialist school. His recruiter would have made all of the arrangements for him. Where he is drilling, the rate (job) he will be assigned, etc. is already written in his contract. Typically, for Reservists he will graduate from boot camp, begin drilling at his unit and attend "A" school next summer. If you have the number you can contact your son's recruiter and ask to have everything explained. They will be your best source of information.
