    Please notify me if it is against the law for a child of 5 and 8 to not be wearing a life jacket in a 36ft cabin cruiser while idiling on the Ohio River

    If it's not against the law it's just plain stupid to not have them in life jackets. It can save their life. If you were stopped this weekend and cited, then I am sure it is the law. Coasties have far more important things to do than just making stuff up as they go along.

    But law or not, put the kids in life jackets... you never know what could happen and that life jacket might be the only thing that saves their life. As a matter of fact, everyone on board should be wearing a life jacket. I don't care if you are Michael Phelps... water can be deadly. Put it on, the life you save might be your own.

    33 CFR PART 175 of federal law requires all children under the age of 13 to wear a Coast Guard approved lifejacket.

    I'm 37, I don't even get on my boat when it's in the slip at the marina without my life jacket.

    My life jacket holds the following:

    Handheld VHF Radio, keys locked to CH. 16.

    Waterproof/Shockproof Cell Phone

    Strobe Light

    Signal Mirror with Whistle and Float.

    Knife

    Personal Locater Beacon

    3 glow sticks.
