My prayers go out to the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake. The Coast Guard is in the process of deployment:
The White House said Tuesday evening that the Coast Guard was mobilizing cutters and aircraft to positions near Haiti to offer humanitarian aid in the aftermath of the earthquake. The assets deployed to the area, included:
A C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla.
The Coast Guard Cutter Valiant, a 210-foot reliance class cutter from Miami.
The Coast Guard Cutter Forward, a 270-foot medium endurance cutters from Portsmouth, Va.
The Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma, a 270-foot medium endurance cutter from Portsmouth, N.H.
The Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk, a 270-foot medium endurance cutter from Key West, Fla.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this disaster and let your daughter know we'll be thinking of her and the crew of the Hamilton....along with all the other Coast Guard men and women who are deploying to Haiti. All our military men and women who are going, as a matter of fact. I live in North Carolina and they just shipped out a bunch of paratroopers from Ft. Bragg plus a couple thousand Marines are on their way from Camp Lejeune...gosh I hope I spelled that right. : ) Anyway, I can't imagine what it's going to be like for our young men and women....witnessing a catastrophe such as this.....but I know they're up to the task. I'm always proud to be a military mom but even more so today. Laurie

Out of interest and curiosity, does anyone here have any hands on experience volunteering for such natural disaster relief efforts? What types of duties does the Coast Guard perform in such disasters? During my time in the Coast Guard, I would sincerely be interested in such international humanitarian efforts.
While listening to NPR news, it was great to hear the Coast Guard being specifically mentioned in the relief efforts. |

We were able to watch the Hamilton go through the Panama Canal on Sunday via the web cam. My husband captured it and it's on his facebook page ( giff jaeger). Our son is stationed aboard also. Praying for all those serving and those they will serve in Haiti. Carol |

Aloha Carol-I sent your husband a friend request - I guess I should have checked first!! LOL. My daughter is also on the Hamilton, she is an FS3. Did you get the email today from Captain D? If not, I can forward to you - it's really nice :)

I'm not even close to being in yet, but a father and son on the same ship? E-mails from the CO? I'm loving the close knit community I'm seeing. |

Basically they are out of communication. I'm pretty sure if the Presidential Palace collapsed, cell towers didn't fair to well in the earthquake. I would also be willing to wager they are a bit busy and time to check in with home is not something that is happening with an y sort of frequency. Another thing to consider, Haiti is a foreign country, if he uses his cell phone from there he may rack up one heck of a bill! When he gets a chance, I'm sure he will call or email or something.

This is for the family who hasn't heard from their son since the 14th. My son is on the Hamilton, also in Haiti. He has been in touch with us, but not on a daily basis. I know they are very busy and communication is spotty. I would have sent you a private message, but I somehow deleted your post and am not sure how to retrieve it!! Oh technology!! :) |

I thought I would share this picture, this is the USCGC Hamilton docked outside Port Au Prince Harbor next to the USNS Comfort. They are using their Helicopter to transport the sick from the city to the Hospital ship.I checked and this isn't opsec - it was published by the PA Office.

I heard from Heather today. She called from a payphone-they are picking up fuel and supplies and then back into the fray. She has taken tons of pictures and sounds quite subdued. She says there are no words to describe the devastation there. Anyway, they are all well, tired, doing their jobs and feeling really proud that doing something great. She did mention that it has been 2 months since they have had a real "port call" and are all ready for a little break!!

Oh and she called today from parts unknown. They are all tired but doing well. Have not had a real port call in over 6 weeks and that is wearing on everyone. They were going to get a partial port call soon and then heading back into the fray for a while. I think they will all need a vacation when they finish this patrol!!

I know she can't read this now but I wanted to send a shout out to the warrior girl child - she is 20 today. It sure went fast!! They are still in the vicinity of Haiti and not expected "home" for at least another month or so. Her last birthday, she was in boot camp so getting used to not being able to reach her for her b-day!
