After work yesterday, my mom called from Indiana. Apparently my bank back home called her. A few months ago my wallet was stolen. Everything was replaced just fine. Well, my new debit card was used about two months ago to buy a textbook online and not used since. My guess is that's how the number was accessed, but someone up by Gary, IN had drained my bank account & then some 3 days ago! It apparently came from a gas station... 2 transactions within 10 minutes of more than 500 dollars in overdrafts. The bank immediately shut off the card. But my checks are direct deposit... and today's pay day. I was cancelled for my shift today which is great so that I may now straighten things out! But it's incredibly frustrating. I love people, but sometimes I really dislike them...
But it is Friday (and my last weekend of class until the new semester starts)! So, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend... thanks for letting me vent!

Oh Sara, I'm so sorry! I really hope it all gets straightened out! I would seriously recommend just closing the account & starting all over again. Obviously they were able to still get in even with debit cards canceled and changed. I really hope you get your money back... Unfortunately none of us can help replace your sanity or frustration. Good luck & vent anytime... That's what we are here for!

Thanks! Sorry about the venting, though! However, I think things are all cleared up! I did close the account & transferred stuff down here. But it's such a pain ... I've heard of three others this past week. Yikes! So, beware!

It sucks being the victim of theft!
I feel your frustration completely been there and done that one...thankfully they only got to use one card (the fire departments visa) before I was able to call and get them all stopped.
Punk butt kids broke into my sons car while were at one of his baseball games took everything they could, both wallets, ipod, mps player, his stereo (breaking the molding around it) a bunch of CD's...they even got my picture of my wife (high school sweetie then) and I at our first high school dance 29 years ago
Please feel free to vent because those type of people suck big time!

My brother-in-law had the same thing with his bank of america card last year... but they replaced everything just fine. Yeah, I'm wondering about that social business, myself. When my wallet was stolen in May, I still had my social in there from MEPS. eeeek.

Alert everyone, anyone, all three credit bureaus... there are specific places to call and alert them to the fact that your SSN has been stolen! That can cause you sooooooo many problems, don't let them get to you, you stop them!

I am so sorry that has happened! Thankfully it is a well known crime nowadays so there is a lot that you can do about it--you are not alone or helpless.
Remember to take advantage of your free credit reports each year. Also, consider using paperless statements for your cards online. As long as you make 100% sure you are accessing the real website for your card, this is a much safer route since you never have to worry about shredding things you get in the mail. Also, consider the Lifelock program. Not trying to sound like an advertisement here (I have no financial or personal incentive), but Lifelock sounds like a good deal. They check your credit reports for you and alert you on suspicious stuff. Even if everything fails you're insured, I think that alone is worth it--the insurance in case you end up being victimized anyway.
Good luck to you--everything will be fine, don't worry!! Just do what you need to do to take care of this for now, be proactive in keeping your credit and SSN secure in the future, and it will all be a thing of the past!! |

Oh I know! I'm waiting another month or so for the free credit report! But ... it's definitely going to be an issue, I think. Hope for the best, expect the worst! And none of my statements are paper form... so who knows. It's just so sad how common it is! The biggest mess when the wallet was stolen was getting the new SS card! Even though I had my birth certificate, he wouldn't allow it as proper identification ... yet he opened my college transcripts from ISU ... still wouldn't give it to me! Then I was out another money for another new set. Messy! I hope to finish the banking deal on Monday. It could've been much worse. Thanks, though! Much obliged!

That's why the new military ID cards don't have your SSN on them anymore. I know on my card as his dependent it wasn't only his number but mine, too! They decided to stop doing that. Proud mom ofSN Robertson, ColinUSCGC Seneca |

lan56 said... Thankfully it is a well known crime nowadays so there is a lot that you can do about it--you are not alone or helpless. Yes, my son remembers it well. I went through "Identity Theft" in 2008. A guy and girl went shopping with a certain number of mine. She posed as me. They did NOT have my card, though. I had it the whole time. My bank called me to inquiry why so much money was being spent in another state in my name, but yet I was answering the phone at home. We got the police and sheriff's dept. involved in that state, and also those officials here in my city. All of my stuff was immediately shut-down. I contacted all 3 credit agencies, the banks, whatever, and I did get all of my money back. Were they arrested? Yes. The police located them very quickly, and those stupid-idiot thieves thought that they would never be found. Now, our whole family has "really tight stuff" on all of our financial things. We learned the hard way, but we learned. Debbie "Ian56's mom" "My sons are the loves of my life"<!-- Edit --> Last Edited : 1/1/2010 6:44:27 PM GMT |

MANY years ago it was standard practice for retailers to ask for your Social Security number when you wrote a check! It still ticks me off that Doctor's offices use your SS# as your ID number...others too, including cell phone companies and the Cable company ask for your last 4 digits.

I had this problem about a year or so ago. Somebody got ahold of my check card number somehow after I'd made an online purchase and next thing I know, my account is cleaned out by somebody buying internet porn! How embarrassing!! My bank didn't do squat. Thankfully, I was able to track down where the charges were made.....found an 800 number and called the company. I explained the situation to them and they were really cool about it.....gave me my money back. Then I had to deal with the bank because my account had been overdrawn and they charged me several hundred dollars in fees. It took them nearly two months to take the fees out of there and in the meantime, they were even charging me 2 bucks for each phone call I made to them regarding the problem. It was such a cluster. Needless to say, once I got it all straightened out, I started banking elsewhere. Laurie

When that happened to us 4 years ago, our bank was totally cooperative and returned all the funds within 24 hours. This was an identity theft of my VISA check card and all were covered by VISA. Within 15 minutes there were attempted charges totalling over $13,000 from places all over the world.

I had to do a police report etc but the bank did end up refunding all the money. It's funny, when I try to use my card people always give me such a hard time but no one seemed to ask these guys any questions. They never called for authorization etc. The bank has since tightened things up a bit but still scary.

I hear you- they were only able to get $400 but to me that was alot and made all my other checks bounce! The bank was gracious in that they waived all the bounced check charges which were almost more then the original amount taken!

Pepper, that cracks me up that you mentione the SS# (though I completely agree). When my parents finally broke down and replaced the rabbit ears with the satellite, they wanted a SS. My parents refused. My dad attempted again when they offered a good deal, yet refused to give them his number. He definitely told them where to stick it. However.... he must've caved or something.... because they no longer live with 3 channels (like myself).
I've found within the past year that more and more people I know are facing the same issues with identity theft. Very scary thought.
