Hey, I was wondering if anyone else has had this same issue. My recruiter had sent in a reservation for me to leave in october, I had a late fee at Blockbuster that actually went on my credit and i didnt know about it, well I didnt pay it within 2 weeks so my recruiter says I wont get to leave til january now, he says I wont be able to go in october even if I pay it within the next couple of days, has anyone else had this issue?

I can't imagine a late fee at Blockbuster stopping you but you just never know what's going to trip you up at this level. I'm sorry this happened but get it taken care of now so you don't lose the January spot as well! Exactly how LATE were you with Blockbuster? I thought if the movie wasn't returned they just charged your account for the movie and all done? I know they did that with me... lost track of a movie, saw a 22$ charge from Blockbuster and then remembered I had that stupid movie. Took it back and they credited me like 17$ or something...

Bad credit can have an impact on your security clearance, and a favorable credit check is required for entry.

What it sounds like happened is that your credit check came back with the late fee which cancels any reservations. CG is filling fast and the next available ship date may not be until the January time frame. Your situation happens more often than one would expect.

    I wish you the best

thanks chuckles, hopefully I can get in October or november, but, if January is the only time then January it is, just have to make the best of it. Also, I was wondering what a day in the life of a gunner's mate would be like, that's what caught my eye because I'm really into shooting and target practicing, my family says my brain is the shape of a pistol

You sound like my recruiter, he's a GM1 and when I mentioned I was thinking about going that route, he lit up and got so excited lol

In addition to going to the range, Gunners Mates spend a majority of their day maintaining small arms. They will take them apart and grease and maintain the weapons. They spend a bit of time doing armory inventories, as well as daily ammunition inventories. Shooting is actually a smaller part of the job.

Oh ok, I was kind of interested in a job that requires carrying or use of a gun, what about an operations specialist? I was told that they are the first to board a boat and will be the first to be shot at, of course that was coming from a devil dog that is crazier than hell...

Any rating in the Coast Guard can be authorized to carry a weapon during the execution of a mission. Boatswain's Mates (BM) and Machinery Technician (MK) are two ratings that do a large share of that duty. There are also special missions groups in the Coast Guard such as DOG that extensively train with weapons of all types. For an interesting video on special training in the Coast Guard click HERE .

OS's are generally in an operations center while boardings are taking place.  While some participate in boarding operations, it's not a common occurence.  As far as the first to be shot at, that would be nobody.  Getting shot at, while it could always happen, really doesn't happen in the Coast Guard, thankfully.  It is EXTREMELY rare for us to be shot at, or for us to even draw our weapons.

Concentrate on preparing for boot camp right now. Once you graduate and get to your first unit, you will be exposed to all the different ratings the CG has to offer and you will then be able to make an educated decision on the rating you want to pursue.

There is one young man on this board that was all gung ho AST! (Air survival man, think Ashton Kucher & The Guardian) That was all he could talk about... he went to boot camp and is at his first station and he is going MST. What looks absolutely fantastic, life altering, complete desire while you are sitting on your couch at home may take on a completely new light when you actually get in there and are doing the work!!!

So you have the right idea, ask the questions but leave yourself open to every possibility and option... see what it's TRULY like before you make a solid decision. :)
