I am in the Army Reserve, and my contract with Army Reserve will end soon. I am thinking to find a job in the coast guard, preferably going to OCS(I meet all the requirements), since I just graduated from college with a Master degree in mathematics. Also, does coast guard have linguist position? I am fluent in Chinese(Mandarin).

Can someone tell me the difference between coast guard and military? Is the life in the coast guard challenging?

    Any more comments?

    Thank you very much!

The Coast Guard is the military... there is no difference on a basic level.

Can you introduce something more? Can I find a position matching my skill? Like foreign language(chinese) , or mathematics.

    Thanks.

As stated, the Coast Guard is the fifth branch of the military. Often overlooked but equally important to our nation's security.

As for your language skills, the Coast Guard does not have a particular occupation of Linguist and thus you would have to choose another occupation, such as machinery technician or boatswain's mate. Your language skills, however, should be noted whenever asked as you may be able to use them as a translator, as a collateral duty or in the course of your normal duties. Make sure to note your language skills at all times and tell your recruiter.

    Good luck.

First, like others have said the CG is military smile . I'm assuming when you said that you wanted to know the difference between the CG and other branches that you might be refering to deployments and occupations? As far as deployments to the middle east go, the CG is on a strictly volunteer basis for duty over seas, this billet is usually a year. However there are many larger cutters that do visit many different countries while out on patrol. A large portion of the CG stays here in the United States protecting the home turf, doing a vast amount of jobs.

Could you elaborate on your question in regards to the CG being challenging? Speaking on behalf of my husband, I'm not the one in the CG, I would say yes. Of course its challenging in many aspects, but I do believe that is what keeps my husband interested in it. It for sure is what you make it, just like anything else. He loves it. I'm extreamly proud of him and I'm sure the mariners that he's helped save are as well and this is just in his first year of service.

Good luck! btw I have a friend in the Navy that is a linguist utulizing Mandarin. If you're looking for a job using that language skill maybe you could head that route?

Not strictly.  For the most part, they solicit for volunteers.  However, there are people over there that are 'selected and directed' to be there.

To learn more about the Coast Guard, you should wait until the end of your contract and set up a meeting with a recruiter.  There is a lot to cover that would take all day to type on a forum post.

The process for applying to OCS is a very competitive one.  Last I checked, out of the 30 people selected for OCS last year, only 3 came off the street.  The rest came from the enlisted side of the Coast Guard.  Those 30 are selected from several thousand application packages that come in each year.

As far as a linguist position for an officer, no.  There may be an occaisional billet out there that may be able to make use of that skill, but officers are not specialized into one job category in the Coast Guard.  Our officers are very well rounded as far as job responsibilities go.  For instance, an O-1 in the Coast Guard may be a Navigation Assistant, Civil Rights Officer, Boarding Officer, and Training and Education officer all at the same time.  You are expected to wear a lot of different hats in the Coast Guard.

Here's the major difference between the other services and us:  Although we participate in war efforts, our main focuses are drug interdiction, search and rescue, port security, and terrorism prevention.  We ARE a military service, just as the rest are.

Again, your recruiter will be able to go into much more detail with you once your contract is up with the Army.  While you are under contract with them, there isn't much that can be done.

My bad, I was always told that it was volunteer only. Thanks for correcting me :-)

Fluent in Mandarin and math degree? Your in a enviable position in my humble opinion. Not necessarily with the USCG but other government agencies, private industry. With China as a rising superpower/trading power your skills are in great demand. Write your own ticket! Shoot high!

Not trying to get off the topic of the USCG, especially if that is what you want, but the U.S. Department of State is hiring a lot right now. They have Foreign Service Specialists and Foreign Service Officers, which both are big on getting multi-lingual and worldly/cultural applicants. Both are government jobs, and have similar benefits and pay to the USCG. You'd also get to travel the world and live in each country for 2-3 years.

Sounds so good and fun I might just do that after the CG. But you have the choice NOW so consider your options.

And since the time Ian posted this reply, his brother was chosen to go to Argentina for a Foreign Service Officer position. And it did help that he learned another language (9 years of studying another language - so he's more than fluent). The dept. he'll be in is for border protection and immigration matters at the U.S. Embassy in Argentina. Great work, benefits, and living in a foreign country representing the United States.
