    Hi,
    I have read the regulations regarding the placement of the HIN on double ended vessels specifically that it has to be at least 2" from the gunwale.  My question is would it be okay to put it directly on the gunwale? the difference is the gunwale on my canoe is solid wood and the hull is 1/4" plywood.  It would be easier to stamp the HIN directly on the gunwale without fear of cracking the hull.  Also how far from the end should it start?
