My daughter is currently active duty....an MST on one of the icebreakers....and her four years are up in 2010.  She's decided not to re-up.....plans to come back home to Raleigh NC and start school.....but she is seriously considering going reserve.  I'm assuming that's possible, right?  She's not really sure about the process for doing that so I told her I'd ask here and see if anybody had ever done that and might have some info for us.  She plans on calling the local recruiter this next week.....she's home on leave for the holiday and since this is the same office she went through when she enlisted, she's familiar with the place and we're hoping someone will have time to talk to her.  I guess some of her main questions are can she pick where she drills or is that assigned?  I thought I read somewhere on the recruiting website that it was assigned but I'm not sure.  Also, there doesn't appear to be any reserve billets here in NC for MSTs so what happens then?  There are billets in Virginia and South Carolina.....can she go there?  And since there aren't any spots for MSTs here in NC, does that mean she can't go reserve?  And what about her rank....if she does join will she still be a 3rd?  I hope these questions don't sound too dorky.  She'd be able to ask them alot better than I could but she ditched me for her friends tonight.  Imagine that!  haha  Thanks in advance for any info.

She needs to let her chain of command know her intentions. They will be the best source of information for the transition into the reserves.

Thanks Gears. I told her what you said and she agreed that's what she should do. I appreciate the advice!

She will go through the in service transfer team. They will call her sometime within the last 6 months of her AD commitment. If they have not, have her contact her admin and they will get the ball rolling for her. It should be a seamless transition.

Thanks for the info, Chuck! Since my initial post, she managed to track down somebody she went to boot camp with....he's also an MST and in the Reserve here in NC. He was able to answer a few questions she had. Anyway, thank you again. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
