    Below is what I found in researching to see if my illness (ulcerative colitis) is an automatic disqualification from entering the CG Reserves or active duty. Every branch is different so i just want to know if anyone knows for sure if there are waivers i can get (doctor's notes, etc...) to get into the CG with this illness which can be controlled with medication. i talked to a recruiter and he told me yes as long as i get a note, but then the navy said its an automatic disqual for them. So i just want to really make sure i can get this waived so i wont be wasting anyones time trying to get into this branch. I appreciate any and all responses. thank you

    Below you will find details from the Army's "Standards of Medical Fitness", as of February 2004. These standards generally apply to all other branches as well. Remember that most of these conditions are NOT necessarily permanently disqualifying, but they are red flags! If you have had a medical complication at any time in your life that is mentioned here, then you need to tell your recruiter. He/she will tell you whether your condition can be waivered, or if it is permanently disqualifying. Remember that if you do not get an official waiver and your condition is later discovered, you will most likely be dishonorably discharged for fraudulent enlistment. The choice is yours.

    (1) Inflammatory bowel disease. Regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, ulcerative proctitis.

    If you are on medication for anything it is typically disqualifying. The reason being, if you need something to stay alive, and you run out of it in the middle of the ocean... Then someone is going to be calling your mother. That is not a good situation.

    Talk with your recruiter though, they will have the best information available for you. Good Luck.

    To add to what Gears has said... Waivers right now are very difficult to come by. There are scads of people wanting to join that are healthy and need no waivers. Be prepared for not such good news but please don't not try!!! Go for it! I understand your not wanting to waste people's time but if this is something you want there is no such thing as a waste.

    Talk to your recruiter. It isn't a waste of time to them either. They don't view helping people as a waste... the very best of luck to you! I really hope you get the answers you want!

    I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.

    UC is a disqualifying factor for entrance into the Coast Guard. Directly from our medical manual;

    Small and Large Intestine.
    (1) Current or history of inflammatory bowel disease, including, but not
    limited to unspecified (558.9), regional enteritis or Crohn's disease
    (555), ulcerative colitis (556), or ulcerative proctitis (556), is
    disqualifying.
