    Hi All,

I am entering the Reserves soon (Hopefully...Just finished MEPS) and was wondering about deployments. I work a full time civilian career, which is why I did reserves. My QUESTION is what are the odds I end up overseas somewhere, or IRAQ, Arabian Coasts? I know USCG is an active player in the war, but aside from rescues and Port Security in the USA and battling drug smuggling...Does the USCG have Direct Combat roles over there like the othe services? If So, what are the chances after I sign my enlistment papers that I could end up over there? I am not the least bit afraid to go there just want to gain a perspective as to what I am getting into as I choose my job rating soon...thanks for the help and happy new year!!

You are enlisting in an active armed service of the United States, one that has fought in every major battle the US has engaged in. There is a chance that you will at some point get stationed overseas in an active theatre of combat. Reservist's are more likely to be called than Active due to the nature of our service.

I cannot give you the "chances" as I do not know, I will tell you this, you have a 100% greater chance of deployment to theater as a reservist than as a civilian. Another note, If called to Duty, you are under orders and are required to report, regardless of employer interaction.

Deployments aside, your primary base will be within a reasonable distance of your domicile.

This is an open forum, which means you're not going to get any specifics here, which is a good thing. You should talk to your recruiter, probably shouldn't be asking about numbers and who goes? PSU or used to be PSU's, not sure now as the rating has gone away., deploy on a rotating basis I believe. As they say in the Coast Guard "Semper Paratus" (always ready) and that means for anything! I think (still a newbie myself, son just getting ready to leave for BC)

The only "real" deployments to the Middle East are either PSUs or MSTs assigned to a RAID team. The term deployment means members who are away from their unit's home station. There are many Coasties in the Middle East that are stationed there and hence are not "deployed." Those members are part of PATFORSWA.

actually-if you look at this this way you get a good perspective. Our recruiter here in Eureka,CA told us this week that there are aproximately 40,000 guard members. Only around 250 are overseas or in a war zone. They all had special training and purposely wanted to go.
I think it's cool that the CG is set up like this.
All 3 of my boys are going in to be swimmers. (if they get thru the school of course)
    I'm excited.
