Hi, short introduction name is Doug I am 22 yrs old. Graduating college this coming May. Have an interest in joining the military, but not sure if a career out of it. Would like to try and make it into the NAVY as a Corpsman. Planning to enlist within a year, or two, and look into obtaining a certification for being an EMT-B. With relation to USCG Auxiliary like to gain as much knowledge and experience that might be beneficial to serving in the military. I was looking into other organizations like the Civil Air Patrol as well. Couple questions if can point me in the right direction or some responses please. 22 years old at the moment wondering what the average age is being involved with the USCG Auxiliary? What type of work do they perform? Having an EMT cert. play a part in my involvement in the Auxiliary? Thanks for the feedback.

    Hello Doug,

I am active duty, but while I was stationed in New York I worked with some Aux guys at my small boat station. As Aux you will perform different tasks I supposed depending on what area or unit you go to. The Aux usually helps out the Coast Guard with Search and Rescue and some even do flyovers because they have airplanes. The age is a variety..I've seen teenagers in the Aux up there in NY. I think having an EMT cert. will most definitely help in your involvement in the Auxiliary. As said earlier you will be helping out in search and rescue and you may be a big part of a big case one day and can help out in saving someone's life.

That depends on which unit you join. I'm joining out of Pompano Beach, FL while I wait to recieve a ship-date for active duty. My particular flotilla is most involved in Vessel Inspections and a few patrols. I have a friend out of Miami and I go with him down there for more patrols, security work, SAR, etc. I will also start going out with the florilla out of Boca Raton because it's RIGHT by my house.

OH that is right! They inspect vessels like your everyday motor boat I forgot about that! haha. All in all they are there to support the active duty element of the Coast Guard. I know in New York we had responsibility of Lake Ontario and 5 inland lakes. The Aux. would usually help us out if we had a SAR case on the inland lakes because most of them have boats on them.

Yep yep, boating safety and education is the main focus of AUX down here. Techincally, while underway, AUX facilities ( boats ) and crews are under Coast Guard orders. AUX, like active duty, are very vesritile. While underway, they are an extra pair of eyes and/or hands to help out in anyway they can. Anything except direct LE or military engagemnets.

Try to get your Boat Crew Qualification while in the Auxiliary. That will get you your E-3 rate on graduation. If you can do any of the AUXOP classes they will help you also. A lot of the guys in the Aux are prior military and can help you with info that will be useful in boot camp.
