    Hello All-

This is my first post so forgive me if my format is a little 'off'.  I've searched and searched, not only on this board, but over on gocoastguard.com as well.....and I think I may have "over-informed" myself to the point of confusion!

I was told an ME position may be opening up at the station which is local to me.  My question(s) is what does a RESERVE ME do as compared to an enlisted ME?

Also, I know what I've read on the different websites as far as BM's go, but again, what does a reserve BM do that is different than an elisted BM?  Is there a difference?

Are either of these positions as 'glamorous' as they are made out to be?  Is an ME really just sitting at a port station doing security work (nothing wrong with that) as opposed to the runnin' and gunnin' some may have you believe?

Finally, I MAY have a chance to go enlisted (my age is a factor) but I'd have to go to guaranteed "A" school....which for now, the only one open is cook school (as told to me by my recruiter).

I apologize for the lengthy post and I'm sure my questions are answered somewhere on this board alread....again, I think I'm just in information overload right now and wanted a clear answer to these questions.

    Thanks in advance!!

ME and BM are the same in either Active Duty or Reserves. No advice on the ME rate as to what they do because it is literally brand new. No one knows for sure exactly what the duty's are going to be.

As for the glamor you speak about, Expect a little of both.

FS (cook) is the only school you would be able to due based on your age. On a side note for FS, it has a hefty sign on bonus and you can get a fairly quick ship date.

    Best of luck!

    Chuck

Thanks for the quick reply Chukles!! My recruiter told me I'd be able to "switch rates" as long as there is an opening for the rate I want, and I am signed off on or allowed to switch by my command. I imagine being a horrible cook would get me out quick! :D

But, is there a minimum amount of time you have to spend in your rate before being allowed to switch? If being a cook is what I have to do to get in as enlisted, I just may consider it. Nothing wrong with it!

Yes, you will need to meet a specific number of months in your rate prior to switching. Your recruiter will give you the details.

Met with my recruiter today and filled out the preliminary paperwork to join the Reserves. Although he did not suggest such, I have a feeling from what I've read here that I may be medically dq'd due to have an ACL reconstruction. None the less, I am going to apply and see what happens. You just never know!!

Am leaning towards the BM rate, but again, I know I have a ways to go before I have to worry about rate lol
