I have thought of joining the Coast Guard for years now but cant muster up enough courage to sign.
If i were to sign are there "areas" that you can sign to do and just do that one thing. Or is it all or nothing?
If i have several questions should i talk to a recruiter or just search for the information i want?

Talking to a recruiter, testing, and taking the physical does not constitute a commitment to any military branch.

You should absolutely talk to a recruiter. Going full time active duty might not be for you... it is an all or nothing sort of game. Possibly reserves might be an option because then you can go to one area and pretty much call it good there.

But please speak to a recruiter. He/she will help clear areas that are grey for you.

At this point I think you have to be positive so that you can keep motivated long enough to be able to get in due to the long waiting process. I would do both, talk to a recruiter and research all that you can! Good luck!

what part are you afraid of?  The regular pay check, the job security, the opportunity to help others, or the honor of serving your county?  It's a tough decision but the rewards are oh so worth it - good luck!!

The CG reserves are just like the other branch reserves. Two weeks a year, one weekend a month, and the chance to be recalled into active duty.

The Coast Guard isn't just like The Guardian. Sometimes the CG does search and rescue, sometimes they do law enforcement, and sometimes they do maintenance.

If you did join the CG you wouldn't just be assigned to a narcotics team. However, if you were stationed somewhere like Florida, where there is a lot of drug smuggling, chances are you would get your fair share of law enforcement.

She is an FS3 - Food Specialist/chef.  This is what she always wanted to do with her life.  She has wanted to be a chef since she was knee high to a grass hopper. She is currently stationed on a cutter that is in Haiti doing huminitarian missions but she has been all over the world, up and down the coast of South America and is having the time of her life. She will be taking her 2nd class test later this month and she will move up.  Her final ambition is to be an admirals chef so we will see.  Go for it~!

Thanks Bored... I logged on briefly last night and didn't see the question to me. :)

As for thinking the CG is The Guardian... please expand your horizons a little bit. It's a good movie but the CG does so much more than that!!! Google the heck out of different things and see what it's all about. My son is currently a non-rate, swabbing decks, painting, chipping, fire fighting, mess cooking... doing a little of all of it & enjoying it! He is learning all the ins & outs he thought he knew as the son of a Coast Guardsman but now realizes there was so much more he never saw!!!
