As promised, I will shed some light on the 1st class of the Maritime Enforcement Specialist Rating...

School has been everything it was hyping up to be. Without going into too many specifics, it has been quite challenging both mentally and physically.

Subject matters so far have covered: Financial matters, Communication, TEAM BUILDING, Values, and Leadership (as a Petty Officer) derived from the Leadership Academy found online. We have just started getting into the Law Enforcement side of things studying amendments, how to board vessels, as well as conducting investigations and policing the water.

The physical side of training is extrememly intense. Not for the meek or soft hearted. We spend about 2 hours day in PT. Our workouts are derived from AST A-School and a program called Cross Fit. You got to not only be in shape to complete these, but need a load of heart and team work ethic.

To sum it all up, a typical day will be 4 hours of class, 3 hours on the gun range, and 2 hours in the gym. Meals in between of course. You are definitely ready for lights out come 2000.

I will say in only 1.5 weeks, we have come together as a unit and help each other out in all aspects of training, which is definitely needed to succeed. There are a LOAD of expectations placed on us, being the 1st class, but we're holding it down.

Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to help answer them.

    Semper Paratus!

Man if I could be an ME I'd gladly make this a 30-year career...but it looks like 4-and-out into civilian law enforcement is the quickest way to have a *dedicated* LE career (not BM or MK collateral LE duties).

    Oh well....

You can be an ME. You just have to wait for it.

Week 3 is finished and in the books. We all finished qualifying at the range on the pistol. We have to make the CG standard as well as the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) standards. Our rating and A-School are special in that not only are Law Enforcement officers for the CG, but our training is recognized federally unlike the BTM or BO quals one receives at the same training center. We are moving on to the M-16 this week which we're all excited for.

Our PT was amped up a bit this week as well. Earlier in the week we did a fan-bike relay. Sounds fun but far from it. With teams of three, we had to cycle 6 miles per team on these exercise bikes that work both the legs and arms. I am a triathlete and even I was hurting in the last stretch of the race. Later that week we did CrossFit for two hours. By Wednesday everyone was limping around with aches and pains. We got Thursday off to recooperate before performing the 2nd CG PT test. I believe we will be tested 4 times total with the regular PT test, and then somewhere along the course of time we will do the Tier 1 PT test for those wanting to work under the DOG.

Classes this week were on Radio Communications, The Law, Radiation Detection, and The Levels of Force. Friday the majority of the day was spent learning how to use force, defensive tactics, verbal commands, etc. We spent a couple of hours practicing pressure points and uses of force on one another. Fun AND painful.

School is still very fun, exciting, and challenging. Till next time, SP

Do you have any idea what kind of jobs/duties you will be assigned to once you get your orders?

Jobs range anywhere from MSST, MSRT, CG Poilice, CG K-9 Units, DOG assigments, Response/Enforcement Units, and we were told there was possibility for cutter assignments. Pretty much everyone wants one of the above listed. Most the reservist at school are already attached to deployable security units as well.

I should also add that a great deal of our duties will include teaching roles. The CG is really getting at making things uniform and having everyone on the same page when it comes to law enforcing and such. So things we learn in A-School will be taken back to our respective units to teach

How many reserve / active slots are available each year at ME-A?
Should a prior service guy, just coming in, expect a long wait for a class date to drop?

When you mean teaching roles, you mean such as being stationed at a sta or sec and informing btm/bo on current laws and such. Can you go into depth sun. The most common thing I've heard is that ME is basically a GM, (especially since an ME2 is replacing our GM2).

The ME rating just is awesome from my perspective. If I finally set of to BC that would be the rating I would grab with both hands.
    I'm curious like everyone else...
How long is ME 'A' school?
AND PLEASE!!! The waiting list? This is a 1st for me. I have to know!

We have an ME3 at my station and he is pretty much a BM3 with deck maintenance replaced by teaching BTM and weapons PQS. He was just on SAR crew the other day, too. Just throwing in my knowledge of the rate...

The wait is going to be pretty long. Currently the list is closed, and I think that it will remain closed until the estimated wait time is under one year. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.) If ME is what you want to do, then do it!

You can check the A-School list HERE.

It's got to be under 18 months. It's gonna be a long wait.

Oops, I think I now need to correct the both of us. According to http://www.uscg.mil/epm/docs/A-SchoolList.pdf  I quote, "AMT “A”, ET “A”, ME “A”, PA “A” School Closure: Due to the projected wait time exceeding 18 months, AMT, ET, ME, and PA “A” school lists are closed. Each list will remain closed until the projected wait is less than 12 months."

So it sounds like it is locked because the projected wait is over 18 months, and it will remain locked until the projected wait is under 12 months.

Either way, it is going to be locked for quite some time!!

I would guess it will be a couple of years before the list opens back up. They still don't know how many classes they'll be able to send through in the next two fiscal years.

Good. Don't let a long wait keep you from doing what you want to do in the CG. I let the wait for Public Affairs Specialist keep me from putting my name on the list. Looking back on it, that would have been a fantastic job for me in the CG.
