I am 39 years old and have been told that I can still join as
a BM because I have my Captains Lic (50 ton and OUPV)                                  the problem is that I had a minor back surgery 2 years ago. I am
100% better now and would like to know if this will keep me
from being accepted? Also I was told that the new age is 40,
does anyone know if this is true?

not enough information on your surgery. You will need to get all your records to include operative notes and get them reviewed by your recruiter and MEPS. You are pushing age limits, get with a recruiter now!!

Hello, I am interested in joining the Coast Guard. I have a question as to my medical status for enlistment. One year ago in June, I had my pectus excavatum fixed, by insertion of a steel bar under my sternum which "bent" it upwards, and into a normal position (Nuss Procedure). The bar will stay in place for 2 more years. This was a cosmetic procedure to fix a "sunken chest". I have no physical limitations and no Health related issues. I can provide a letter from my doctor to back up this information. Can I still join the Coast Guard or at least go to MEPS to find out? Please let me know ASAP. Thank You,

Dbaba, I don't know if you will check back and see this... Colin had that surgery when he was 9. The bar was only in his chest for about a year and then it came out. He was able to keep it and we had it engraved with the dates that it was in his chest. LOL, the silly things parents will do! He was able to get in with no problem. However, you will note his age when he had the surgery and he was long recovered before attempting to apply. The hardware being currently still in your body you will probably have a problem. Don't let that stop you from contacting a recruiter and find out what your options might be after the hardware is removed. Best of luck!
