Dropped my son off at the airport this morning. When I got home I realized he'd forgotten his gortex jacket, which I'm sure he will need in Alaska. So, I want to mail it to him asap. My question is about the address.  Is it typical to send something to the commanding officer, like this?

    Commanding Officer
    (Ship name)
    P.O Box XXXXXX
    Kodiak, AK (zip code)
    attn: (my son)

Is this the way to address the box? It seems wierd to send something to the commanding officer even if it says attn ??

i would suggest waiting until he there and checked in. he will be given his p.o. box in the barracks pretty quickly. then ship in out in a flat rate box. it may be an extra few days.....but he will definately receive it. shipping things otherwise is a crap shoot and it could very easily be lost on base and take months for him to get it.

weather should be in the 50-60's. not too bad!!

So they each get their own P.O. Box?

Yep, I worked on the civilian side of the post office when we lived there, Jimmy worked the military side as a non-rate. Each member gets a PO Box. We had our PO Box from Jim being in the barracks and our home address. It worked out nicely for us. He might need the Goretex but it's heading into summer there, it gets warm, he should be ok to wait until he gets checked in. Jen is right just sending it without a good address could just get it lost in the shuffle. :)
