I understand that the first couple of days of basic training are spent in medical. What exactly do they do to us? Everyone knows we get a urinalysis to make sure we are on the up and up, and some shots as well, but what else?
Is it basically MEPS all over again where they draw our blood, examine our bodies, make us duck walk, etc?
Many thanks,
James |

If your shot record isn't up to date you get shots. You go to dental to get your teeth checked, you get weighed in again, at some point to receive the small pox vaccine, and I'm sure there are a myriad of other things that go on.

Shot record? If I don't have that or can't remember when or where that was done would that be a problem? I haven't been to a doc in like 8 years, and my childhood doc was in another state....
Thanks! |

You just get all the shots. Don't worry, you won't be the only one. |

More than likely, dental work won't get you rephased. ("Reverted" is getting held back for disciplinary reasons, "Resphased" is for medical reasons.) They'll pull wisdom teeth on people that need it, and then start doing fillings, cleanings and other dental work. If you need a TON of dental work done, they'll probably still let you graduate with your company, but just keep you at Cape May for an extra week or so. However, that very rarely happens. In fact, I don't see it why it would need to happen at all now, as small as the companies have gotten. |

Actually, it depends on the amount of dental work. I don't have the manual in front of me, but a "TON" of dental work will probably get you a discharge.

You won't be discharged for 2 cavities. There is limit though.

Come to think of it, I haven't turned in any medical records to my recruiter or anyone, nor do I have any..
Will I need to somehow find them and turn them into my recruiter prior to basic, or potentially bring them with me to basic? I went to MEPS, passed without any issues, and never gave trying to find past records a thought since I didn't need to provide them for MEPS.
Thanks for any input,
James |

No, you will not need to get your records before going to boot camp. On the other hand, if you have copies for yourself, it may help you in the future. MEPS was there to handle all the med paperwork for you.

I would trust your recruiter as things change pretty regular but this is a post from DrCSK who is assigned to Cape May, dated July 2009 " Usually having cavities isnt an issue. If you have more than 10 usually you need to sign a waiver that you agree to stay if your dental work cant be completed within the 8 weeks of boot camp." you can find the thread here... http://www.uscg.org/Forum/aft/6359.aspx#62305 lots of old posts about cavities...just type cavities in the serch box and click, there are 4 pages worth on my screen. |

Do we get to eat breakfast before the medical screenings. I have to keep my weight up for the re-weighing. |

Why don't you start eating more now? Don't wait for te last minute. When I went to my recruiter for the first time he took my weight, I was 5'8 and 185 lbs. That's 5 pounds over the limit for my height. When I went to meps 2 weeks later I was 180 and just squeezed by the weight limit. Going to boot in January and I now weigh 160. Anyways I dont know when you ship but it seems like your 1 pound under? Just start eating now so you have one less thing to stress about. |

I had mine cut out last year. In and out in 45 minutes. I was definitely swollen, but never really hurt or popped a pill. Good stuff. Perhaps you will have the same luck. I also spent a small fortune about 2 years ago on cavities. I would've definitely been DC'd if I had enlisted during that time. I had a root canal and crown within the past year on one of those fillings.... so I'm a little freaked when thinking about the condition my teeth when I arrive at Cape May. Keeping my fingers crossed that there's nothing there to toss me back to this terrible state. |
