Actually a mascot dog does mean a lot. It's just like any other dog that is considered a family member instead of merely an animal. The dog at my station sleeps in the duty rooms, follows you when you do your round at 5AM in the cold and dark, sleeps at your feet when you're in the comms room bored and alone, and encourages the guys to bring their kids and dogs because of how much fun the station's dog is to play with. Some days, after the work day, we all just gather outside on the yard and play with the dog, instead of sitting around playing XBox or something.
I suppose at a small tiny station a dog is for visuals mostly, but at some physically sprawling stations and cutters, a dog is a big morale booster and treated almost like a fellow shipmate; take away the dog and it's like taking away a year of morale events and losing a close friend.<!-- Edit -->
