BON VOYAGE, BUOY: Station Destin's mascot retires

    With photos.

Not momentous, by any means. But it was obviously important to them, judging by all the trouble they went to...

LOL-we have one in the AUX trailer named Bubba that we have posed in a chair - he attends/oversees all our aux meetings!

Actually a mascot dog does mean a lot. It's just like any other dog that is considered a family member instead of merely an animal. The dog at my station sleeps in the duty rooms, follows you when you do your round at 5AM in the cold and dark, sleeps at your feet when you're in the comms room bored and alone, and encourages the guys to bring their kids and dogs because of how much fun the station's dog is to play with. Some days, after the work day, we all just gather outside on the yard and play with the dog, instead of sitting around playing XBox or something.

I suppose at a small tiny station a dog is for visuals mostly, but at some physically sprawling stations and cutters, a dog is a big morale booster and treated almost like a fellow shipmate; take away the dog and it's like taking away a year of morale events and losing a close friend.<!-- Edit -->

We did a retirement ceremony for one of our Explosive detection K-9's, Sparky. It was nothing formal or anything, but it was still nice. At that point, he became the property of his handler.

I had the honor of serving with Buoy for the past four years.  I saw him this past Sunday, his last day on duty.  Any time we had our PT tests he was there to keep you moving, I swear he knew what a passing speed was cause when you slowed down he would start barking at you.

The SN he is leaving with is a good guy.  I wish them bost the best of luck.

Good to know. My son has been at STA Destin for the past 28 months or so. He would be 1084 though, assuming I have deciphered the code correctly...
