I saw this asked in another thread but no one answered so Ill try again.  I am curious how long on average it would take to promote in the reserves.

Specifically what I am interested in is eventually becoming an officer in the reserves, but my understanding is that currently that aren't many positions available, so if I wanted to enter now, which I do, I would have to go enlisted.

Additionally my understanding is that with a college degree I would go in as an E-3, and if I could qualify for DEPOT I would begin as an E-4.  Then to qualify for the ROCI program I have to make it to E-5.  Time is a little bit of an issue for me becuase of age, I would need to make all that happen within 5 years

So, about how long does it normally take to move from E-3 to E-4 and then again about how long does it take to move from E-4 to E-5 in the reserves?

You go from E-3 to E-4 so long as you have attended "A" school, had at least 6 months as an E-3, and pass your EPME test. To go from E-4 to E-5, you need at least 6 months as an E-4, and complete all necessary qualifications for E-5 in order to compete in the service wide examination, which is a test to gauge your knowledge of your rating. If you are high enough on the list, you get promoted.

Thank you, so it sounds like in order to become E-5 you are competing against everyone else that wants to be an E-5. In the reserves would you be competing against your unit, others with your job rating or everyone (for example top 5% scorers regardless of location or job)?

So I'm curious about promotion beyond E-5. Does a Reservist typically have to put in more years than Active in order to be promoted? It would make sense because Reservists only put in two days a month while Active are full-time. Any info here?<!-- Edit -->

    Nope, same time.
