Hi all! I had a question concerning my boyfriend's ship. He called his mom with his orders today. He did not give name of the ship, just said it was 378 feet long and is stationed in San Diego following boot camp. I hear that those larger ships are a big deal and can be out to sea for months? Is there any website where I can find out about it?? Is that the Hamilton?! I am so new to this all and really would love to research this information to familiarize myself with it, so when he talks about it...I will actually know for sure what he's talking about! haha. Appreciate everyone on here for answering all of my questions.
Thanks.

It's either the Hamilton or the Chase. Yes, the average underway period for them is 2 months at a time, although 3 month patrols are not that uncommon either. If you go to www.uscg.mil/units you can learn some more about the 378's in San Diego.

My daughter is on the Hamilton and their last patrol was a little more than 3 months as they were in the vicinity of Haiti etc. I was actually surprised by how much they can contact home via email and phone calls during port calls.

Is it typical for west coast 378's to transit the canal and go to the atlantic and vice-versa? Or is it a rare occurance? FUTURE COASTIE COMING IN 2011 |

I've been through the Panama Canal on the Gallatin.

The Hamilton has gone through - I will attach a picture of it going through.... Can't remember if this was going to Haiti or coming from Haiti - it was cool though we got to watch her with the web cams coming and going.

I live in San Diego. He' s going to love it here. Where else in the U.S. can you visit the beach, the mountains, the desert and a foreign country all within an hours' drive? And the weather! So nice. I'm spoiled. I'll stop now :)

Texas? lol Except for the "hours'" (sic) drive part. Best you can do in any place in Texas is probably three out of four...<!-- Edit --> Last Edited : 5/22/2010 1:53:45 PM GMT |

We got the beaches and mountains here in North Carolina. That's all I need.
