I have recently discovered that the Coast Guard has an Investigative Service. How hard is it to become a CGIS Agent? Are they mostly Reserve or Active Duty? Can a Coast Guard Officer become a special agent?

I don't know for a fact whether or not there are commissioned officers in CGIS, but there are definitely enlisted and CWO's. You need to be an E-6 in order to apply for it, and CGIS does a lot of their own recruiting. They look for prior law enforcement experience. It's not NCIS though. They have the ability to investigate CG personnel and things that happen on CG bases, but they don't have the broad jurisdiction like NCIS has. NCIS is very comparable to the FBI. I'm sure that CGIS has it's good and bad features. I personally wouldn't want to do it. The idea of busting Coasties never really appealed to me. It is very selective to apply for it. I believe that the reserve rating of IV is associated with CGIS.

I would say yes, it's more similar to that. I can only speak from what I've seen though. I'm no expert.

COOCH- thanks for the info. I agree with your point about it not being an appealing job when busting another coastie is involved. I just was not really aware of the program and was curious. I wanna go coast guard law enforcement but I think some other kind would probably be more suitable.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a great job. I just don't know if I would like that particular part of it. On the flip side, I'm sure that some of them commit some pretty serious offenses and deserve it. Either way, it's better suited for people other than myself.

CGIS doesn't just investigate Coasties. That is part of their job. A larger part is working with other law enforcement agencies to work on investigations related to maritime law. They have a good gig. There is a board once a year and it is pretty competitive. Any enlisted rating can apply but officers cannot.
