I have two different situations, the first is my son who waited to get his flight physical done after boot camp and at his first station, prior to or just after he submitted his name to the A-school list. He did in fact go up the chain of command and put in a chit. The physical took a while to get scheduled and even once it was done it took time to get it approved.
The second is my son-in-law who had his flight physical done while he was in boot camp. He said he was able to get his done since he didn't wear glasses. Apparently if you have glasses there are not able to process a flight physical at boot. My son did have glasses and that is probably why he didn't get his done in boot.
Not being in the service (only the proud father of an AST and a FN) I would venture an educated guess that a physical done through a non military doctor would not do you any good (other than tell you how you are doing).
Getting your flight physical done early does prevent the NPY next to your name and according to my son-in-law, who just put his name on the AST A-school list, is towards the end, but his Chief said he is in the teens when it comes to getting orders.
