Can anyone please explain why they pull wisdom teeth in Boot camp? My new coastie just had 2 pulled, the teeth were not giving her any problems.

They might not have been giving her problems today... but say in 6 months from now she is on a 378, somewhere between Honolulu & China and all of a sudden they start giving her problems. Guess what! She is a world away from a dentist & relief. She will also do her duty section no good at all if she is in an incredible amount of pain while at sea. It is done as a preventative sort of thing. She isn't the first, she most certainly will not be the last. This is SOP for the military.

I hope I don't have to get my wisdom teeth pulled because I had mines fully grown in for the past 3 years and my denist says they are fine and i don't need them pulled.

Bella more than likely they will pull them. Especially if they are through. Everyone in my son's company had them pulled if they were through the gum. He has two that aren't and they didn't do anything to them. A lot of people have already had them removed by the time they get to bc.

It makes sense to avoid future problems. Now I see their point Thanks Macie

Colin's weren't in, still under the skin. He doesn't have them anymore. They dug them right out of there. He said it actually wasn't bad at all. The noise was a bit disturbing but he really didn't feel anything. The dentists did a really nice job. I could probably have gotten through basic except for that... I would have run screaming in terror off the base. I give everyone credit that sits there and just lets them remove teeth! EEKS!

My son leaves tomorrow for Boot Camp (hotel tonight) and the danged Wisdom Teeth extraction is the only thing that is freaking him out (he freaks quietly, luckily). He has all 4 still. If I knew about this before it was too late, I would have done it with his dentist here. Poor guy The only time he had dental work like that, he was much much younger and the dentist gave him a sedative prescrip first. Probably no chance of that this week.......

Actually be glad you didn't have it done before he left. It could have possibly changed his enlistment date. He will be fine. There are far too many before him that had it and there will be even more after him. If they didn't know what they were doing, they wouldn't be allowed to do it. Tell him not to sweat it. By the time they do that they are so pumped & it is so ingrained that they need to be there for their shipmates no matter what... it's like an amazing curative! At home he would be allowed to sleep on the couch for days and not do anything and feel the pain. This way he will want to get back to his company, his shipmates and he will fight through that pain as though it were nothing more than a slipnter being removed. Tell him he'll be fine.

Best of luck!!!!! Are you going out for dinner tonight before you say good bye? Are you going to MEPS tomorrow to see him sworn in and leave?? Hang in there, mom... we'll be here if you need us.

Like Macie said, if they didn't know what they were doing, they wouldn't be doing it! He will be fine like she said. For some reason they only took two of my son's out when he was in bc. He went the other day for his dental cleaning and they are sending him off base to be put under to have the other two out. When they took the two out in bc, they gave him Motrin and he went right back to his duties. No time to think about pain! They all get through it and so will he! Good luck to him and to you during this time of adjustment!

Oh i know from the old board threads about this, that we shouldn't rush to his dentist or else it would effect medical, etc. You all have been a fountain of information this past year!

I am sure he'll be fine. I probably should have never even told him though! LOL

I'll start a new thread to update about my son leaving, etc.

they dug to get to mine, only good part in that was a shower by yourself and no yelling. I actually am still having some discomfort from them which was noted in the release. I go see the dentist for my check up but I know there isn't anything they can do.

My son had his out and while it was a big deal for me thinking about him at boot camp without my "pampering" - he actually did fine. And after pricing how much to have it done before he enlisted, it saved us a couple thousand dollars!

Getting your wisdom teeth pulled is the best part of boot camp! The dentist is really good (or at least mine was) and you get to sleep all day

My son also had 2 of his wisdom teeth dug out. He graduates 9-17. He said they hurt but they only give you motrin and saltwater rinses. He went back to his unit the next day bc if you miss more than 3 days you get reverted. He also didn't get a "green armband" indicating some physical problem for the same reason. He got a performance tracker for not sounding off loud enough but said he couldn't with the stitches in his mouth. He survived and I was worried too Moms. It did save some money though.
