Why didn't you do just that? I have asked at places and sometimes people just don't realize the CG is a military service. I make sure they understand that it is and they deserve the same appreciation and respect. So saying you wanted to ask how come is the same as them not displaying the flag. Ask the question, you have the knowledge to toot the CG horn... go for it!!!

I truley believe it is like Macie says...many people just do not know.

Just asking a question to kind of maybe give a different prespective so please do not take the wording wrong...If Dan was not in the Coast Guard would you have noticed or maybe even known that the Home Depot was not flying a Coast Guard flag today? Two years ago I would have not known unless somebody told me.

your right Kyle i would never have noticed, very sad but true. I think just being a mom to a coast guard son does make you open your eyes more to what is around you. I just wished there was a way that stores would know to include the Cg flag ..Maybe one day.. Macie is right people o need to speak up .

By the way i loved the DVD..

    Awesome...so glad you enjoyed it...

Being attached to something really heightens the awareness levels...being a firefighter I cannot help but notice sprinkler systems and fire/heat curtains and the type of rafter systems that are in commercial businesses when ever I go in them, such has Home Depot and Wal-Mart. Michael used to make fun of me but guess what he now notices them as well...lol

I'm glad you'll ask! That's a good thing. When former President Nixon died, flags were ordered to fly at half staff. I drove past a business whose flag was not at half staff. I called them and spoke to the manager, when I went home that night, the flag was lowered. I'm not afraid to call someone out when I see something I don't like. But I have a big mouth & I'm always doing stuff like that. LOL

Let us know what they say! I'm curious to hear especially since I work for one of Home Depot's biggest competitors. LOL

    On the other side.....

The walmart in elizabeth city has the american flag hanging. The ONLY military flag hanging is the coast guard flag. I think it just depends on where you are.

Yeah, The Wal-Mart here in Raleigh has a Coast Guard flag, too, along with all the other branches. They're at the entrance and you can't miss 'em when you walk in the door. Puts a smile on my face every time I go in there.

The local spots here in southern Kentucky pay tribute to the Coast Guard. The local minor baseball team has a tribute video to all military personnel that plays before every game and they show the Coast Guard in it as well. I think you're right, many people don't know. I didn't have any idea what the CG was until I was nearly 22.

I am thinking that because we are an island and rely 100%+ on the Coast Guard - they are a huge presence here in HI. I can't remember really hearing alot about them when we were landlocked.

Sorry I did not get to every one sooner, I had the joy of going to the dentist and having 2 root canals done ( oh yeah the fun off that ). Any way’s I did go see the manager and he was actually very nice and sorry that the Coats Guard flag was not hung. He also said that he was going to forward to his boss that I had been in so that for next year His store as well as the other stores would included the Coast Guard flag. Lets hope that is what comes off it, but im glade that I got to say something.

Unfortunately, it depends on where you are living as to whether people understand the Coast Guard is even a branch of the service. We live in south, central Kentucky. Needless to say, we along with a hand full of CG families and retirees have had to be the informers of the history and purpose of the Coast Guard.

There are two very nice things I have noticed. First, we have a single A ball team that always does a wonderful honor to the military before the Anthem. The Coast Guard shine brightly among the rest and the other is Hobby Lobby always have all branches represented in their frame etc. department. That is where I got my sons CG sealed scrapbook. We have had many people slow down when our CG flag is out. We hang our CG flag out on all special days and when Micah is home. Everyone knows he is home and the door is open for patio cookouts, lots of hugs and all of his military friends of every branch come to share stories no matter the age or whether they are active or retired. All of this came from exactly what luvmycoastie brought out. The need to get people informed about the very serious and important work the Coast Guard does everyday

I know exactly what you mean. I was at the Cracker Barrel today and they had Army, Navy, etc. But not one single Coast Guard item. It really ticks me off. I think some things need to be changed. All you see is the typical Army, Navy, Marines, etc. If you are going to recognize some of them you need to recognize them ALL. Glad I'm not the only one who gets really mad when they can't find Coast Guard stuff!

Okay, it happened this weekend. I was at Barnes and Noble looking for just one book on the military shelves about the Coast Guard. We all know there are wonderful books out there. Not one. I have yet to ever see one at our Ky. store. There reason, not enough interest in that subject. The topper was when I saw a big thick coffee table size book written by a retired COL. telling the stories of the --- you guessed it ---Army, Navy, and Air Force. I thought this has to be wrong. I opened the book, scanned it from front to back, okay Marines, Navy Seals, WHAT??? not one word about the mighty USCG.
    He embarrassed himself.

Barnes & Noble and Amazon bith have really great CG sections for books if you order on line. I have found some books in stores but online you have a much bigger selection. But I know what you mean... people just don't get it that we are part of the military armed forces as well. Oh well, maybe our kids generation can show them a thing or two different! I hope you got the name of the book, the publisher & the author... not that he will rewrite his book, but you can write a letter telling of your displeasure to our fine service. Of course, if the Col (ret) knows nothing about the CG, maybe it's best he said nothing as well.

If anyone is interested in some good reading, check out David Helvarg. His book "Rescue Warriors, The US Coast Guard, America's Forgotten Heroes" is awesome. I bought it several years ago and have read it numerous times. You could also google him because he's had a number of articles on the internet about his support for the CG. Also, my kids got me a coffee table book a few years back.....It's called "The Coast Guard....Foundation for Coast Guard History". I think it was published in 2004 so it's alittle old but it's an awesome book.

    Hi All,
I haven't posted on here in awhile. ( I do however, hop on and read whenever I can) Anyway, just wanted to share- i am a teacher in an elementary school, and yesterday when I was getting my classroom ready for the upcoming school year, our school Librarian and Media Specialist was very excited to share some new books she just received for the Library. Among them were two wonderful books about the United States Coast Guard ! I was so happy to see that. I bet I will be the first person to sign them out! I don't know, do you think it had anything to do with my constant chatter about all the great stuff our loved ones do in the CG? Now at least our students will get to learn a little about a branch of service they probably never heard of. It made me very proud. Can't wait to read them!

I haven't gotten to read the responses to this thread. I will check the B&N site out. But, I just have to chuckle at your thought about the Col. (ret) because those were my exact thoughts when I considered sending him a note. My second was "kinda scary". lol.

Since then my oldest son and his college roomates have a CG flag hanging outside their house to honor the CG brother in their family. That's cool!

kyuscgmom, where are you located in kentucky... well, you don't have to say specifically. i'm in bowling green and i have a few cg books. I have Helvarg's book which I picked up from B&N. And I have ADM. (ret) Loy's book "Character in Action." I am a bit of a Coast Guard nerd anymore.

Admiral Loy was the 8th district commander when we were stationed there, Jim was an Ensign. Then he was Commandant when we were in DC. He is a really great guy. He went to bat for Colin when he was only 2 years old because Colin had bad teeth, I know at 2, but Admiral Loy made a couple of phone calls and he got us an appointment with a dentist on Keesler AFB. They took excellent care of Colin and made his teeth all right! Adm Loy will always have a very special place in my heart,
