I am 19 years old. I am currently enrolled in college and have come to the realization that I am in need of more structure. My uncle, who was a Marine for 9 years, suggested I apply to a service academy. Considering I love water and boats, I decided that the Coast Guard was right for me. I graduated with honors and a GPA of 3.8. On the ACT I scored a 26, only taking it once. I have been active in sports my entire life. I coach little league teams and umpire as well. I have an employment background. Is there anything you see that I could do to increase my chances of being accepted into the academy? Thank you in advance.

Yes, you could apply. That would increase your chances more than any other action you could possibly take.

CG academy does not require a nomination so don't bother your congressmen. Just apply.

Yea I plan on applying in late August/early September when it the apps re-open. What really factors into being selected or not? I'm new to all of this, and do you think I have a chance?

It is a VERY competitive process, more so than Active Duty! You will need to start getting all your extracurriculars together paperwork wise. If you do not do volunteer work or community work, coaching, etc get it going now. I was an admissions rep for the Coast Guard Academy and when I say we work with the top 1 percent of applicants across the nation, and then only offer an appointment to a small percentage of that pool, I am not kidding.

Do I think you have a chance? Yes, everyone has a chance. Will you be offered an appointment? I have no way of answering that question. Check with a local recruiter as select offices have been tasked with referrals for the USCGA. They can help get the ball rolling!
I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted Coastie, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.
