Quoting from the Unit Information Sheet: Congratulations on your assignment to USCG Aids to Navigation Team Saugerties New York! ANT Saugerties is located in the small up-state New York town of Saugerties, located about 45 minutes south of the Capital City of Albany on the Hudson River. Our area of responsibility is the Hudson River from Waterford, NY at the entrance to the Erie and Champlain Canals south to Peekskill, NY. Our primary mission is Aids to Navigation. Our secondary missions include Search and Rescue, Marine Environmental Protection, Homeland Security, and any other mission assigned from time to time. We are responsible for over 250 aids to navigation along the river. The USCGC WIRE (WYTL 65612) is co-located here in Saugerties. The small crew of 11 here is made up of Boatswain’s Mates (BMs), Machinery Technicians (MKs), and a few non-rated personnel. This is an excellent place to strike any of these rates. There is a Chief as the Officer in Charge, a BM1 as Executive Petty Officer, and MK1 as the Engineering Petty Officer. The Deck Department is headed by a BM3. Unit boats include one 49’ (BUSL), one 26’ (TANB), one 22’ (AMBAR), and one 18’ Skiff. Members must qualify for a variety of positions onboard including in- port Security Watch stander, Officer of the Day, Crewman, Engineer, Coxswain, and a variety of Buoy Deck Operation positions as well. The town of Saugerties has a population of about 20,000 and has a variety of activities to do while on liberty. The fishing and hunting is excellent in the area, and the winter provides plenty of snow winter sports at the numerous nearby ski mountains. New York City is about 1 and ½ hours to the south for those who prefer the action of the big city, a professional sporting event or even a Broadway show. There are also a variety of colleges and universities to choose from when or if you decide to further your education. |

I realize I may be a little late on this post. I was stationed at the ANT team when we still had 45308. I was the first occupant of the new barracks next to the station in 1992. Your daughter will love it there I hope. I always said that I would've done 20 years at Saugerties if they left me there. I eventually moved out to the hamlet of Malden which is just north of Saugerties. In Malden directly behind the post office there was a gentlemen who rented apartments out to coasties. He treated us great. The apartments overlooked the Hudson. Maybe he is still doing it if your daughter wants to live on the economy. Hope she enjoys it. |
