You know, considering I want to jump out of a helicopter and risk my life to save others, you'd think i'd have more backbone when it comes to talking to girls. I've even gone skydiving and it barely fazed me, yet when I see a girl I like, I lock up. It's kind of embarrassing really. I keep trying to delude myself into thinking that I'm avoiding talking to them, because I'm going into the military and don't want to hurt them. I know from experience, long distance relationships are not fun. Considering how important getting in the Coast Guard is to me, I can't really afford any distractions either. What's your experience with dating and being in the service? Did you meet more people while in? Did you join in a relationship? A lot of people think you become a magnet in the dating world once you join the military. Some say it's the uniform and how you change as a person, some say it's because they're just trying to take advantage of the situation, because they know you have a stable job and pay. What do you all think? William |

I lost the girl I was dating for a couple years because I joined, we still talk and are trying to work it out, but me being in Florida and her being in California isn't going to work, and I assume the only way it would work is if I was closer. I knew it was a sacrifice that was going to happen. I had actually met with a girl when I went home and some stuff happened, but she couldn't think of dating me since she hears stories of port calls and cheating, and her friend was on a wmec and I guess their port calls were full of not good stuff. Often hard to meet girls here, you meet them for 2 weeks and then it's like, Hey, I'm leaving, see ya in a month! When I go home to visit, there is a girl who i had always just been friends with that I worked with and every time I go home, she's always trying to start something, talked to my friend and she knows the benefits of her marrying someone in the service. I wouldn't phase it or throw much thought to it, Obviously people are married in the CG, have kids, live a pretty regular life. if you ever go to Puerto Rico you'll fall in love with the girls there lol, none of us wanted to leave, and I can't wait to go back. |

One of my CC's was at Sector San Juan before becoming a CC. He married a girl from there! I'm in a relationship right now... been dating for about a year now... so we started dating about 8 months prior to me leaving for boot camp... the distance is tough but we make it work... although I must say if I was single, I don't think I would have trouble finding girls... there's plenty of new people I've met. Also, I feel like in Cape May they really instill a new sense of confidence in ya. Just my opinion. |

My husband and I have been together for 6-7 years now and married for 1. Shortly after our wedding actually he told me he was thinking about joining. I personally was sort of scared but excited at the same time. 3 months later he was off to boot camp. But as Macie said once, I think, it takes a special person to be a military wife or girlfriend, you'll find one in due time. I love the military life. But it takes a special person to be able to follow someone around and understand what and why they have to do what they have to do. It takes awhile to get used to but hey its the military. =] |

My husband and I have been together for 9 years this August, married for 5 of those years and in the CG for 2 of those. Not going to lie, its hard. But there are those out there that are strong enough...and if not strong enough, stubborn enough (this is me) to make it work! lol Personally I don't like the military life, I think if we have a good station next time I'll think about jumping on board for "life", but the hubby LOVES his job. So that makes it easier to be stubborn and make it work! lol I actually "blame" aka thank, the CG for getting me pregnant this time. Hubby hurt his hand at work, had to have multiple surgeries thus keeping him home more...thus more, ahem, "adult time" and well we all know how the birds and the bee's work...lol |
