Guess what was waiting for us today in our mail, his first letter! Sounds confident and strong! It is nice to hear from him. I know the training for Victor 183 has barely begun, but I was hoping to find out how others are planning the trip for graduation, with these questions in mind:
When to buy tickets? Does it make sense to bring him home within the 5 days of leave and then send him on to his duty station, or ?? Since A schools have a waiting list, I assume his is a non-rate (?) until it opens up. What type of housing is provided or not while he is a non-rate?
Thanks! |

Dad, As far as buying tickets, I waited until about week 5 to do it. You just never know what might happen. My ex-husband bought his tickets almost immediately, well guess what, a coupld of hundred dollars later he had to change his tickets, twice! I waited and only bought once! If you don't bring him home where will he go on leave? Of course he is a sailor now & that close to Atlantic City, I have some ideas what he can do! LOL No, you will want to bring him home and spend some time with him. If he is on a ship & its getting ready to get underway, he might not get the 5 days. But you should plan on him wanting to come home. Everyone says to sleep... Colin went out to a friends 21st birthday party that Friday night and didn't come home until Saturday, they were having a ball all night. If striking reopens and depending upon what he would like to do, he can start striking a rate. If it doesn't open or his career path isn't strikable, then yes, he will remain a non-rate. There are worse things in life... he will get a lot of training and will be able to see a lot of the rates in action. Housing depends upon the unit he is stationed at. Colin lived aboard his shhip for a long time but is now happily enjoying a barracks room. There are others that get assigned to an area where there is no available billeting so they are out on the economy. Once you find out where he is going, we can help you with better answers on that one. |

Thanks for the reply. Are there travel days added to the leave, it just sounds so short to get them home and then back to wherever they are going in five days. What is striking? |

Dad, Striking is sort of like on the job training... instead of going to an A school, you learn your craft while at your station as a non-rate. It takes longer than going to A school but you get the hands on learning. Like everything in life, there are pluses, there are minuses. Wepprop's son was a striker, I believe he made his advancement now. He could really give you a good perspective on the ins & outs. However, there are many rates that can't be struck, A school is the only option for those rates. I grew up in NJ, my parents still live in NJ. Colin lived in NJ for about 18 months. When he graduated boot it was easy just to drive up the Parkway and stay at my mom & dads for a few days. He was reporting aboard the Seneca in Boston on Thursday. So it was pretty much a no brainer for us. But your son will probably want to get home, get some of his personal belongings together, clothes, xbox, computer, ipod... see some friends & family and then report to his station. He won't want to just hang out in Cape May for 5 days doing absolutely nothing. Trust me, you will want him to come home to show him off a bit and strut around your new Coastie. Nothing wrong at all with that sort of pride. Macie |

Macie, Thanks, we live in southern california, so the logistics will be a little siticker potentially depending on where his duty station is to be. But you are right he will need to come home at least for a couple of days. thanks! |

Hey all, My wife is part of V183 Im still not clear on a few things. Im planning on flying to Cape May for graduation. im assuming the coast guard provides them a flight home, if so do they know at any point what flight they will be on? Just thinking at that point i will have not have seen my lovely bride for 8 weeks. I dont want to be stuck in Cape May overnight if she has a flight home that night or vice-versa. Maybe im over thinking this ;-) I see on here a lot of you are starting to get letters, I just happen to be out of town this week for work and have dad checking mail at home. ive been told there is a letter waiting for me at home!! Its good to find this message board and see from others letters that they are doing fine. i was also wondering about A-school. Her recruiter advised her sometimes there is a six month to a year waid depending on the school. Is this the norm? She is going for MST. Thank you all for your info! |

Yes, the normal wait for A school is 6 months to a year. MST however may be longer. |

Coastie husband, They don't necessarily give them a ticket home... they give them a ticket to their next duty station. She is in Cape May, if you live in Wisconsin and she is assigned in Oregon, essentially she can stop because that is on the way there. If you live in Oregon and she is assigned to Florida, well then she is on her own to get to Oregon. I know it sounds tricky but trust me, she will know exactly what to do. My son wasn't making any travel arrangements, he was driving out of Cape May, staying in Jersey & I was driving him to Boston. It was very easy for us. I have heard a lot of people sayign they get to call home from the travel office when they are making flight arrangements. She should be out of NJ after boot camp, no hanging around for a day or anything... mention in your letters to her to keep you posted, that will seem silly because of course she will. But she is remembering a lot of things right now, a gentle reminder never hurts! Congratulations to both of you! Best of luck and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to hit us up... we'll try to help best we can. Macie |

Coastie Husband, I'm not completely sure about the travel stuff but Old Guard knows best! =] As for the A-school question I know just the right answer for ya. I'm not trying to be negative but its coming straight from the a-school list and projected waiting time. For MST the wait is over 24 months..You can check it out here: http://www.uscg.mil/psc/epm/docs/A-...olList.pdf Don't feel bad my husbands is the same way. It sucks. =[ But hey, she'll have to wait at least 4 months at her station or wherever she goes in order to be put on the list. Hopefully it'll pick back up and start moving along at a good rate. Enjoy the ride, its great! I love it. |

I got a phone call from my son too-same thing-earned a 1 minute call, however I wasn't home! Can't believe I missed him!!!!!!!!!! We went out to eat & didn't hear my cell phone either!!!!!!!! I am so kicking myself !!!!!!!! He left a message that he was fine but has a little 'Cape May Crud'. Hopes to earn another call next week. Didn't know this was possible - had it in my mind that I would't hear from him until week 5. From now on my cell will be front & center 24-7!!!
Did your son tell you how he 'earned' the call?? Happy for you that you had a chance to talk to him. Had a long letter from mine this week. Sounded SO Good!
Yes - we should all send pictures this week - That would be fun for All of them to get pictures from home :-) |

Thank you for the link. I think I picked out my son in there. I also got a one minute call last night. In watching some of the uscg videos (specifically week 4 Cliff Boone) he got a call home week 4 bc he scored 100 on the midterm, Might be why they got that call? I forgot everything I wanted to ask him and just got in that I loved him and to be strong. In the letter I got he said it was the hardest thing he's ever done in his life. They also took 2 wisdom teeth out so he was in some pain. So proud of them all! Can't wait for graduation. My son is going to "A"school in Hopewell, VA Nov. 15th for boatsman's school. This was coordinated by his recruiter before he left for boot camp. I know some talked of wait lists - so wanted to mention that. Good Luck to everyone!

I read somewhere that the Coast Guard books their flights home for them. You are suppose to write her what flight you will be on and they TRY to get them on the same flight home.

Received a letter today my son is going to galveston texas! He wanted to be close to home in california. but I think he will enjoy himself. He had called his girlfriend last week so we didnt get to talk to him. but he said he would be calling us this week, week 6, to share more information. He didnt say much about his orders, I guess he could be on a boat or galveston island. excited to hear from him and more about his station. |

Awesome to hear...from the sounds of him saying Galveston I would presume he is going to Station Galveston as it is run separate from the 4 cutters in port there. If he was going to a cutter I would believe he would have stated he was going to the Cutter Dauntless or Buoy Tender Harry Claiborne or one of the Construction Tenders, Hatchet or Clamp...but anything can be lost in excited translation so very curious to know, please share when he calls you with the awesome news. |
