Blaze rips through Mass. Coast Guard station

CHILMARK, Mass. — A massive blaze has torched a Coast Guard boathouse and pier as well as a truck and trailer on Martha’s Vineyard, forcing people to evacuate the 22-person facility by boat, officials said.

Petty Officer 3rd Class James Rhodes said there were no immediate reports of injuries Monday in the blaze at the Coast Guard station at Menemsha Harbor in Chilmark.

Rhodes said the blaze began about 2:42 p.m. and quickly engulfed the boathouse and pier as well as a truck and trailer for the 25-foot boat that was in Woods Hole at the time of the fire.

The station’s 47-foot boat evacuated the pier before it became engulfed in flames.

Officials at Chilmark’s volunteer fire department did not immediately return calls for comment.
