    Hi everyone,
I'm 17 and I live in upstate NY. I graduated a year early and I'm going to college in the fall, I'm also going to enroll in EMT classes in December and I'm planning on joining the coast guard in 2 years when I get my associates degree. I talked this over with my mom and she's really supportive of the idea as are my grandparents. I've spent a lot of time on the water, I did an outward bound course on the coast of Maine, did a semester on the coast of Maine and done a lot of canoeing/hiking trips in the Adirondacks. I also have several wilderness first aid/ CPR/AED/epinephrine certifications. I really want to join SAR but I'd settle for almost anything. I'm probably going to call a recruiter later today for info but I stumbled across this site and think that this is just what I need for my questions.
    Thanks-
    Nick

    Welcome aboard Nick,

Let me ask you something... why wait to join the CG? You know if you join, they'll pay for your college. I'm not trying to talk you into or out of something but it is worth exploring. Think of the money you can save by allowing the CG to pick up your tuition. Either way, get in touch with a recruiter, get the process started, it is a long road to navigate and I wish you the very best of luck. If you have any questions, ask away, we will do our best to help you out.

Well just like we say needs of the service come first, in your case needs of the family come first. It is very commendable a young man will stay at home and help his mom for a couple of extra years. Your mom must be very proud of you. Well for a couple of years, while you are waiting, join in the conversation, ask questions, make friends and you'll be all set to go when you get there. Welcome aboard and best of luck with everything.

If you are interested in finding out more and doing some stuff now with the CG, you can always look for an auxiliary unit to join. It's all voluteer and you work what you can, no pressure and you can gain some very valuable experience along the way. Just a thought...
