Hopefully I will be on my way to B/C sometime this fall and Im wondering what happens if there is an emergency in the family while Im away. Such as the death of a parent? My father currently has stage 4 esophageal cancer and his time is limited. Ive accepted the fact that it could happen and I may not be able to do anything about it. So Im just wondering what does happen in an instance like this. Thanks!

My condloences to you & your family on your father's illness. I hope he can be there to see your graduation. Please speak to your recruiter to find out a good answer on this one. Anything I could say would strictly be speculation. As a parent, I am sure he is thrilled with your career choice and wouldn't want you to worry about him. Go and be the best Coastie you can be and know he is full of pride for you. God bless him & the rest of your family.

This is straight from the Helmsman.. "In an emergency, your famiy should contact their local American Red Cross Office. For question or concerns of an urgent nature, they can reach the Public Afairs Officer at (609-***-****) or after-hours the Officer of the Dsy at (609-***-****)". Not sure if I should post the actual numbers. PM me if you don't have a Helmsman and I'll give them to you. Hopefully your family won't need these numbers and your father will be well enough to attend your graduation!

My condolences to you and your family. However, that was the exact same question I had. My recruiter even clarified. I believe it was last year that someone posted on a recruit whose entire family perished in a tragic accident.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I now have personal information on this one. My mother in law was given just a couple days to live on August 7th. My daughter is on the USCGC Hamilton based out of San Diego and they were out on patrol "somewhere down south." I got the call Sat pm and called the Red Cross right away. She was flown off her ship by helo to Panama City Airport and was on her way to Rapid City SD by Sunday evening. She actually got there before my husband and I did and we were all able to make it before she passed away on the 14th. I commend the Red Cross and the Coast Guard for being so awesome. Her ship even sent flowers to rural South Dakota from the ship out in the middle of the ocean! I have nothing but kudos for how well that whole thing worked out. She came to the funeral in her uniform which made my father in law so proud I thought he was going to burst!! He is retired Navy. It meant alot to the family that the USCG was so responsive and caring.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry to hear that. But it's such great news that the Coast Guard is such a wonderful family. It's exactly what I'm going to need! I wasn't sure if that treatment would be permitted for grandparents... it's good to know. So sorry to hear of your loss.
