    My retired AIR FORCE neighbor gave me some advice. (Yes, AF...not CG... but still wondering) He has retired CG friends.

    He said that whatever I do... DO NOT raise my hand and volunteer if they ask for volunteers because it's a trick and will get me punished and i'll end up doing something terrible, or getting yelled at..etc.

    I've always been the type to volunteer. I've felt like there is an extra job that needs to be done, I'll do it.

    Is it just normal jobs? Or....do they ask for volunteers and then humiliate them.. Like, should I do only what is necessary,...and nothing MORE or LESS?

    Well, that may be how they do it in the Air Force (...and my father-in-law is a retired AF Lt Col)...BUT, the Coast Guard EXPECTS you to volunteer for duties. It's a small service, and everyone does a variety of jobs.
    Volunteer and your Company Commanders will respect you. Just make sure you do a good job with the duties you are assigned.

    I don't agree with that. I volunteered for a lot while in Basic Training. Watch coordinator, laundry crew, colors team, cleaning detail, and a few others that I can't remember. I enjoyed everything I volunteered for and I never got yelled at for volunteering. The people that I saw getting special IT were the ones that either volunteered or were voluntold to do something and they either didn't do it, or messed up somehow (IE wrong forms filled out, showed up late, etc).

    My husband volunteered too, he said if they asked anyone and it was something he wanted to do he volunteered. He also said it helped A LOT with making the day go by much faster since you would always be moving and doing something. Just some info. =]

    Just make sure you know what you're volunteering for before you raise your hand. Most of the work isn't too bad but you might get stuck doing something you really didn't know you were volunteering for.
