We hung around a little bit. We went to the exchange and did some slow shopping... my son & I are very close and it was the place no one else was... there was no one hovering and we were able to just talk and he told me stories and we laughed and we bought goofy Coast Guard bumper stickers and window clings. Of course everyone was waiting for us at the restaurant and they were pretty ticked we were late getting there, we just shrugged.
Also, none of us had planes to catch. We were all staying somewhere in NJ. Colin & I were going to North Jersey with my parents for a few days, Jim was going back up the parkway about 70 miles to stay with his parents... so lingering and looking around and talking and lunch, it didn't matter to us, there were no flights anyone had to catch. That might make the difference as well how long you have to show them around. Either way, time or no time, enjoy your graduation day, that's a big first step.
The funny thing I just thought of... it was the first time Jim, my ex, saw Colin in his uniform. Jim is a Commander, Colin is obviously a non-rate... probably the only time in his career a non-rate can keep a Commander waiting for almost an hour and just say "What? I was shopping with mom." and get away with it! LOL
