I was wondering when benefits would start; I'm curious about the insurance and the BAH. My wife and I are trying to sort out what she will do during my time in BC. Will insurance start for her while I'm at BC or do I have to graduate before coverage will start? I am also wondering If we collect BAH while I'm at BC, because she would be considered a dependent or does that only begin at your first unit (if required to live on the economy of course)? I was reading in the Helmsman that during the first week of BC I could apply for BAH.
"In additioin to base pay, recruits with families may apply to receive BAH. This is normally done during week one of training. The amount is based on the status of your dependents."
Does anyone know what "status" means? Both of these will play a big role in what she ends up doing during my eight weeks. Thanks

"Status" means, basically, what kind of dependents you have, how many you have, where do they live, are any of them also in the military, etc., etc., etc. You know, "status"! |

While my husband was in boot camp, I received BAH...however, I didn't get benefits until we got to his first unit. |

You and your wife are insured while in boot camp. In fact your still covered for a little time afterward as well. I'm not married but some of my shipmated were and they had them send a packet to their families with this sort of information. I reamember one them telling me his wife was getting BAH. |

You will get BAH as long as you're married before you go to boot camp AND it is noted in your contract. As far as medical goes, if you need to go to the ER, etc go. Keep copies of everything. You'll have to file a claim with Tricare later to get reimbursed. You won't be able to draw any other benefits until you have an ID card. You'll need to get one as soon as possible after your husband graduates. His Chain of Command can assist. |
