    Hey Girls!
I'm new at this Coast Gaurd stuff. I've only been married to my husband a few months, but he has been in the Coast Gaurd for over 2 years. His schedule has been really crazy since we've been married and will probably be for a while still. My husband will be going to A-school "hopefully" sometime next year and we will be moving to a new station. But now its like we can't make any plans. Everytime we plan something things change for him and we can't do it. Including getting our own place and living together. I was just wondering if its always as crazy as it is now for us or do things settle down? Once we get to a new station will it be the same crazy schedules or does it depend on where we get stationed? I'm so very proud of my husband! But I do need to know more what to expect for our future if I can. Thank you so much!

Is there a reason that you can't get a place together? Is his command stopping him? It is not normally anymore difficult than submitting a chit to get housign on base (if he qualifies) or being released from the barracks/ship.

A lot of the future stuff does depend up on his rate and your station. You might hit a station that is a nice 9-5 Monday thru Friday sort of thing or he could end up on a 378 and be out to sea for 3 months at a time. It all depends but again, living together shouldn't be a problem. As far as trying to plan something and having it changed at the last minute, it happens. There are also other plans that will go off without a hitch, super smooth, no worries at all. The needs of the service come first so just be flexible with whatever comes your way. You will find you will get a better & better understanding as time marches on, it won't seem as crazy.

Best of luck... what A school is he waiting for? Any ideas on where you would like to be stationed next or are you just looking at it that anywhere can be an exciting adventure?? Let us know if we can help... I'm an ex-wife of a Coastie, mom to a Coastie, in one way or another my entire adult life has had something to do with the CG. There are a lot of other men & women on this site that offer great advice... just ask.

    Welcome aboard,
    Macie

    Thanks for your info.
The only reason we can't get a place together is because his schedule keeps on changing. Other people probably would already have a place, but because of what we thought was gonna happen and what is happening we don't. His cutter was suppose to leave for a tour two months ago and hasn't yet. We're still waiting to see if they are or not. Right now he's on one of the cutters that goes out for 3 months ect. After A-school I don't know where we will be or what we will be on. We're hopeing for something different than now.
We have been talking about where we want to get stationed after he's done with A-school, but not to much. Do you have any suggestions as to where would be a good place to live? My husband asks me where I want to live. We want to pick a place together, but I have no clue. I've pretty much lived in the same place my whole life. I don't know where is a good place and where isn't. Any idea would be great! Thanks!

It seems your husband needs to talk to his chain of command about your situation. The Coast Guard is generally very generous about giving its members ample time off to search and acquire housing, even helping with financial arrangements. They can also offer suggestions and advice about a good place to live. He needs to sit down with his command and get these things worked out. Also, you can make an effort to contact the wives of other Coast Guard members he's stationed with to help you. They will be invaluable to you, especially when he gets underway. Ask if your Cutter has an ambudsman...most do and will offer you lots of help.

Good luck...keep us posted.Where are you statiuoned? Maybe we can hook you up with more suggestions.

A suggestion on where to go... hmmmm... do you like sun & fun & beaches? do you like mountains & scenery & snow? do you like city life? I have lived in Alaska, NJ, Virginia, Louisiana, Oregon, Texas right now & I'm moving to Wisconsin in the next 6 weeks or so (OK, panic moments to follow very soon from me)... so if you can, experience it all and love every minute of it!!! Keep one thing in mind always for your career... No matter where you go, you will leave; no matter who you are stationed with, they will transfer! So if you love the place, absorb it all and leave no stone unturned. If you hate it, it will pass, don't bad mouth it and be a Debbie Downer bringing other wives, possibly less experienced then yourself, down to a level of depression. That won't make you or your tour any more well liked. As for people, if you make friends you like, tell them you love them every chance you get, they'll move or you will. If there is someone you don't like, just be cordial, you are in the same boat being military & you might need them for something or they might need you, leave that door open for yourself but you don't have to have them over for the holidays!

I hope that helps a little... let us know what you like & maybe we can come up with some great locations. Also, you don't have to be afraid to say which ship he is on. You just need to censor yourself about sailing dates and ports of call, that sort of thing but otherwise saying his boat is really ok. My son is on a 270 out of Boston, the Seneca. My ex-husband is currently stationed in Iraq.

I would rather have sun, but I will live with anything really. I tend to get cold super easy and I like hot better. But I don't despise the cold. I grew up, and lived most of my life, in Wisconsin. Thanks for your info about enjoying where we get stationed even if I don't love the place. I'm not as worried about where we're going now. I'm really excited just to see the world. My family is big and we never got to go on vacation hardly at all. I'll take in everything we see and do. Thank you!
Its not that we don't have time or money to find a house its just that we don't know when he's leaving, if he's leaving, and where we're suppose to get a house. So we haven't gotten one yet. We could have just gone out and gotten a house two months ago, but we didn't know what was going on so we dind't. We are most likely getting an appartment this Friday, but I still am not 100% sure if thats still the plan. It always changes.
My husband is on the CGC Boutwell 719 stationed in California. I like the weather out here to. We love nature! Anything outdoors we love. Camping, hiking, biking, horse riding, 4-wheelering, swimming, ect. City life is not our favorite way to live, but you can't always help that. We're getting use to it now since thats where we are, but neither of us have lived in the city growing up. We would prefer to live in the country but anywhere out here is to far to drive for work. Thank you!

You sound like you are up to just about anything so you will be fine. As far as getting your apartment, don't worry about the comings & goings of your hubby. Just be perfectly sure in your lease there is a military clause and speak honestly to a perspective landlord. Explain that your husband will be attending a military school and you may have to leave prior to your lease running out. Any good landlord, especially in a military town, will understand and will take that into consideration when renting to you. We have all been there at some point in a lease, it works out ok.

Now here is where I'm going to turn the table on you... You grew up in Wisconsin!!!! How fantastic for me! Where in Wisconsin? I'm transferring for my job and moving to Beloit in the next 6 weeks or so! One of our other moderators and superhero's, Jen, has family in Wisco as well. If I have questions about Wisconsin I have another source I can bug now.

Thank you for all your help and for answering all my questions. I feel a lot better now
Yes the guy that is renting the place out for us is very nice. He said he usually doesn't do short term, but he is letting us do rent it monthly, and if we have to weekly. He said he has a lot of respect for the Coas Gaurd and is very willing to work with our schedule. We are very blessed by that. Thank you for letting me know about that info. My hubby is a pro with that kind of stuff...
I grew up about 3 hours from Beloit. Have you heard of Viroqua. Its a very small town. I actually lived about 15 miles outside of town, but yeah. Lacrosse is the next closest town that has actual shopping besides walmart or walgreens... lol. I have family that lives in Janesville so I've been around Beloit and Janesville quiet a bit in the last year or two. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I'm an open book...

Macie, I know this is not excatly you as you are a very down to earth, sensible and super nice person, but with you moving from Ft. Worth TX to Beloit WI, I am picturing the movie "New in Town" with Renee Zellweger...when she moved from Miami to New Ulm MN...I laughed out loud for most of that movie...I am sure it is not the same but I get a good laugh thinking about it just the same. LOL

You will be missed here my friend!

In His life changing name, God Bless!

You're gonna LOVE the winter. We lived in Rockford, Il...just a little south of Beloit for 12 years. -23 one morning, wind chill -50. Bring a jacket......and a snowblower!    (we were so thankful when the temp "warmed up" to -5!)

I have been looking for houses in Janesville, Beloit, I spent the night in Rockford and looked there too. I'll have fun making a decision on where I want to put down my next set of footprints! Notice I didn't say "roots", I'm not ready for roots yet. My dad said I can have his snowblower. I'm familiar with those after living in Alaska & NJ... both places that was a welcome sight when it started snowing. Of course this winter when we got over 12" in Ft Worth and we didn't even have a shovel... Scott used a piece of plywood to push the snow out of the driveway. Now if that isn't redneck, I don't know what is!! We have a 2 car driveway, he would hit the seam on the concrete driveway in the middle and drive the plywood into his belly. I was laughing so hard I fell in the snow! LOL

Ok, let's not hijack this young lady's thread too much... trust me, I'll be posting a thread soon about the perils of moving to Wisconsin and house hunting from Texas! HAHAHAHAHAHA I"m not even military, why am I doing this??? LOL

Hang in there! Its good you're getting everything pretty much in order though. My hubby is supposed to be going to a-school next year too. Can't wait to see where we'll be going next! As for things happening with plans..it happens and it sucks but they gotta do what they gotta do. =] On Veterans Day my hubby and I were planning on a relaxing lazy day but he got called in AND he had just put a huge slab of ribs on the grill..Guess who had to finish it..meee..lol. And I suck at that stuff.. Anyway, what was supposed to be a 2 hours turned into a 6 hour call in, which was pretty much the whole day gone by then. So it happens. =( But take it as it comes. You'll do fine!! =]
