Im enlisting as an E3, i havent decided weather or not i want to make a career out of this yet. Im just curious how one would go about becoming an officer if you start as just a regular guy. My recruiter said officer candidacy was an option for me since i scored like a 93 on my asvab. So what are the requirements to even get to OCS. I know you also have to have like a perfect record. And how would your rate change if you become an officer. Suppose your a Maritime Enforcer, how would your job change?

The qualifications for OCS are listed at www.gocoastguard.com as well as at the Leadership Development website. In short, if you have a four year degree from an accredited college, you can apply at any time. If not, you have to meet the grade and educational requirements listed on those web pages before you can apply.

Rates are enlisted occupations. If you are picked up for OCS, you will no longer have a 'rate' and you would probably end up doing something quite different.

What wepprop says is all true. But to add, there are so many ways to become an officer it is hard not to if it is truly your desire. All officers started as "regular guys" they just found a way to become an officer.

Here is a short list of how to become an officer after you have enlisted:
You can apply for the CG academy and get your degree and commission that way.
You can earn the required college credits and apply for OCS.
You can work your way through the ranks, become a warrant officer and if that isn't enough, you can then apply to be a LT.

If you are an ME, there isn't really a comparable specialty so you would be doing something different with a small possibility of getting the opportunity to do some of the stuff an ME does for a very short period of time. However, if you were a MST you could probably jump into the job fairly easily as an officer. In other words, it depends on your rating.

    Good luck.

Thanks for those answers, very helpful. Seems to me like becoming an officer would be a great way to go if i decide to go for the full 20 years.
