I just graduated from bootcamp and am scheduled to report to my unit, which is a PSU, this coming weekend. There are some things that were not explained to me by my recruiter that have me concerned. Some of the information that was not disclosed to me is as follows:
1.) There is a 5 year committment to a PSU unit.
2.) I cannot drill at the PSU on weekdays.
3.) I cannot qualify at the station right by my house.
4.) I will be deployed atleast once every two years at a PSU.
5.) The bonus I am scheduled to recieve is attatched to the PSU and not to the rate.
My ultimate goal is to get into OCS and to make a life long career out of the Coast Guard and I don't want my first impression in the service to be a bad one. However, I wish that this information had been disclosed to me because it would have influenced my decision. I am concerned and would like to know what I should do to transfer from the PSU to the station. I have not recieved any bonus yet and have a guaranteed A school for Machinery Technician at the end of January.
Any information that might be able to help me out would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you |

Report to the PSU as per your orders. When you arrive explain the situation to your immediate supervisor. Your chain of command will have to approve a transfer for you to the Station. The issue may not be one of disclosure. It may be one of questions you failed to ask. Recruiters are well trained and pass on as much information as possible. But, they are also expected to have a working knowledge of every program in the Coast Guard. It's a daunting task to try and keep up with changes in procedure and policy. |

Gears, Thank you very much for your propt reply. Would you advise that I explain this situation to my immediate supervisor immediatly upon arrival or to wait a little while before doing so? I do not want to give off the wrong first impression. Thank you again for your help in regards to this matter! |

Obviously, be professional and polite but let them know what the situation is so they can help you. Don't wait until the end of you first drill weekend. When you sit down with your Super to discuss the PSU let them know then. You're welcome. |

i am with gears here. I would make it clear what you wanted but if they do say no realize it is no ones fault except your own for not doing the research ahead of time. You signed up for the military and you could go to the station and be deployed every 2 years if something big happens. That is one thing a lot of reserves forget they are there just like active duty. They can give you 3 day notice to be anywhere in the world almost. enjoy your time in the coast guard and best wishes |
