There has been a lot of talk about OCS, college degrees and warrant officers. I wanted to get a little information on what a Warrant Officer actually was and how it might differ from a DC Officer. How does an enlisted person become a warrant officer?

I quickly found a very brief section on 'Enlistee-to-Officer Programs' (part 1) - specifically regarding a Warrant Officer position.

    http://www.uscg.mil/hq/capemay/Educ...grams1.asp

And also, the USCG Chief Warrant and Warrant Officers Association website:

    http://www.cwoauscg.org/

--haha I've read the word 'Warrant' too many times...it sounds like such a weird word to me now, just saying, anyways..

A warrant officer in the Coast Guard is a e-6 or above that is an officer that is still in the enlisted ranks. it is kind of the middle ground between officers and enlisted. The reason they are called Chief Warrant officers in the coast guard instead of warrant officers are because you have to be an e-7 or above. Or you can be a e-6 that tested for advancement to e7 and you are in the top 50 percent. Warrant officers are specialized in a field. any more question you have feel free to ask

Warrant Officers are not "still in the enlisted ranks", they are commisioned officers who take the same oath as an O-1. Warrant Ofiicers due however have a specialty which relates to either one or more enlisted ratings. As far as becoming a Warrant Officer you must be an E-7 to E-9 or an E-6 in the top 50 percent of the advance list for your rate. The one exception to that rule is that if you are excepted to become a Special Agent for CGIS you are commisioned a Warrant Officer, you need only be an E-6 to apply to CGIS.

You can get in trouble with the term 'Warrant Officer' because it means different things in different countries and even varies slightly between the service branches in this country. The best, short description I've seen this this Wikipedia article.

Some good information but a lot of wrong information as well. Here is the real deal. First a quick general definition of what a warrant officer is:

"Warrant officers possess a high degree of specialization in a particular field in contrast to the more general assignment pattern of other commissioned officers. Warrant officers command aircraft, maritime vessels, special units, and task organized operational elements. In a wide variety of units and headquarters specialties, warrants provide quality advice, counsel, and solutions to support their unit or organization."

    Now for some specifics:

USCGBM2 is right on for CG warrant officers and what it takes to become one. When you apply to be a CG warrant officer you can only apply to become a warrant officer in a particular specialty unlike a commissioned officer who applies for a general position and specializes later. The competition to be a warrant officer is just as fierce as becoming a commissioned officer.

There are five warrant officer ranks. WO1, CW2, CW3, CW4, and CW5. The Coast Guard only uses CW2--CW4 however. Being called "Chief" has nothing to do with enlisted ranks at all. It is simply a way to discern the different ranks. Remember, other services besides the CG uses warrant officers and their senior enlisted members are not called Chief.

I have been enlisted, a warrant officer, and a commissioned officer so this information is first hand.
